Astell & Kern KANN - DAP with Massive Storage & Battery

Just bought the original Kann. Loving it. Much better sounding than my Pioneer X100r and now need to get some balanced cables for my various headphones to make the best of it. Loving it. Wanted a good DAP. Streaming not a concern.

Is it indeed so much better than the Pioneer XDP-100R? I have that one for 3 years now and overall I am content with it (except for the poor battery life and the fact that PowerAmp cannot access the HiRes chip for some reason). The Kann is floating in my head for a while, but reading some of the downsides in the Amazon comments I am beginning to doubt again. The fact that it is getting so hot, for one. And that it takes ages to read the contents of an sd card, every time you switch it on. The Pioneer is fairly quick, even with my two mirco sd cards of 400 gb each. No to mention AK's poor client service (as experienced by some users). I hate to spend so much money for just an incremental improvement. Especially when on other levels it would be a step back. I'd like to hear your take on it.

a&k has lost me as well .. no software updates for the KANN .. slow slow power on/off and reading of SD card contents .. so where to now?

questyle new master that’s due out in june maybe roughly in the same price range as kann .. initally was thinking of updating to 1000M but worried a new one comes out in 6 months and it will no longer be supported ..

That´s exactly my fear.

Instead of upgrading to the SP1000M, i went to the Ibasso DX220. Waiting for it to arrive, test and compare

"Agreed - I use my KANN because of the storage capacity. Have a 1TB SD card and a 512GB MicroSD card in there which means I can carry all of my music with me with room to spare. It's a mistake not to have two card slots in a revision."

Yes lets talk those sizes, brands and prices.I didn't know the KANN could use them at that size.
Hi,

Does it mean the 1TB card works as well? (Micro SDXC or SDHC???) I have a 512 SDXC with adapter in the SD slot, it works fine but it was necessary to format it before with the KANN...
Thank you :)

I specifically bought the KANN for it's memory storage and the fact that it could power my Senn HD800.

I have a rather large music library and enjoy my tunes,no streaming, got my own and it all fits on the KANN.

Even though the clock hasn't worked from day 1 and I don't have wi fi to update the unit I still like it.

No memory problems and all is well.

So I'm a happy camper but when it does die I will be looking for another unit with high memory capacity and can drive the Senns. If it's an A&K then I have no problem buying this brand again but I will look long and hard at other manufacturers.

A&K has made me a bit skittish.

The fact that I can't update it over the internet is troubling to me.

It works,sounds good,and does what I want(to a degree) so I vote for it,:D

Fake news. The Kann does scan your library every time it is turned on but it is only looking for new additions, that's all. It does not do a fresh initial scan of the whole library. Furthermore, you can still turn it on,, press play, and it will play while it is doing the NEW music scan.

I purchased my Kann two years ago this month. I have had exactly zero issues with it and I use it almost every day. I find the UI to be stable and easy to use. I only wonder at this time if I will be able to find a replacement battery for it when the time comes.

Is anyone considering the new and upcoming Kann Cube? I do not know why the build reminds me of some sci-fi space vehicle.:)
