Does the 'aging' develop a nice patina, no?

Whether it's nice is highly subjective. Tho the salmon pink marks we see from that demo unit is more likely the actual color of the pure copper showing through once the surface shiny coating wore off, and not rust from oxidation. I remain highly intrigued by an SS version should they make one. I love me some blinks :D

I just picked up my RWAK380 today and am heartbroken to report that I have encountered these 'fatal' problems:

1) There is noticeable clipping / feedback using my Westone 4R and Shure 846, the clipping is most severe with the Westone 4R, where with some piano and vocal tracks there's a constant carpet of buzzing from start to finish, and it is detectable even at low volumes, almost sounding like a very fuzzy / loud noise floor. The buzz has rhythm and with some listening it is obvious it is a feedback mimicking the notes being played (mirroring the music in length and decay). Initially I thought this was my iem's drivers being busted, so I went to a shop and demoed multiple of their iems. The problem was replicated on even the K10 and SEM6 (the shop speculated that this was due to the RWAK380 output being too powerful for my 'middle tier' iems and that maybe the problem will go away when I try some multi-armature / difficult to drive iems). The only iems that were almost free of this noise was the new full metal jacket JH Siren Series Angie. I then plugged in my Layla and the problem was also less severe than the Westone 4R. I have plugged my 4R into other sources like the shop's AK240 and my iMac into Mojo and the 4R performed fine and clipping free.

2) The battery dropped at a frightening quick pace. This was so exaggerated and alarming that I really think something is terribly wrong right away as the RWAK380 site cites the battery is not affected in any way. A 3-minute song (ALAC 16/44.1) used up almost 5% of the battery. When I first turned on the unit after pick-up the battery was at 93%, I have used the DAP for maybe a combined total time of 1.5 hours at most and the battery is now at 12% (I have received the 15% warning already). No power-hungry stuff like DSD or 24/192 tracks were played to expedite consumption.

3) The unit got searing hot just playing 1 - 2 tracks, I have a feeling this might go hand in hand with the battery problem, since overheating burns a large chunk of battery off electronic devices very quickly (I have experienced this when my iPad was incessantly trying to connect with Wifi on a plane and the tablet got irregularly hot and burned through battery like a hot knife through butter). This was a similar case.

Now I don't know if these are natural trade-offs and consequences that are direct results of the modification, or if it's just my modded unit being defective, so can any other RWAK380 owners share their thoughts? @speedracer1 @Apina

I have contacted Vinnie and am so very anxious to find out what's going on

Hi Prismstorm,

Never had that problem with the unit both ak380 and amp work perfect.
Battery time is identical and it runs the same temperature it did before the mod.
Sounds strange, I'm sure Vinnie will sort it out for you, definitely sounds like something is not quite right.

I ran the RWAK380 down to 1% and am now recharging it back to full to calibrate the battery indicator in case it was a software glitch.

Will be testing the DAP with iems for one more day tomorrow to gather more observations, but will most likely send it back at the end of the day.

Thanks for the info!

Since you are OCD with your gear, I am sure you don't mind giving the Cu., a polish once a week... some needed TLC

mmmm.....was looking for a balanced 2 pin for my Zeus and AK 380 cu. Got this from Egghead today. Really good pairing (Zeus, PEF 23, ak380 cu):

Hi prismstorm,

Wow...I'm really surprised that your experiencing a problem with the RWAK380 and I'm so sorry to hear that!

All the issues you have carefully articulated have not happened to me with my RWAK380 including never having an issue with the power draining any faster then it was before the mod.  Also the battery doesn't get any hotter then before the modification as well.  I am confident Vinnie will get to the root of the problem quickly and he will do the right thing for you my friend.  If you need any support from this side please feel free to reach out for me. Vinnie is a absolutely stand-up guy!

Sincerely,
-Speed

Mmm.....by using my small collection of headphones and in ears as much as I can. 365 days divided by 29 current headphones/in ears. Still manageable. It gets interesting (for me at least) when you factor in my DAPs and amp/dacs. More combos than I know what to do with. Except for the KSE 1500, I have a gaping hole in electrostatics that I need to cover in the next few years. After that, I can relax a bit. Probably. Maybe.

mmmm......been working my butt off since university. Also, hearing loss is genetic in my family (3 generations now so  it  is not  a fluke). I'm all out in this hobby because I do not want to wait when it is already too late. I'm very sure that a hearing aid is in my future. And I'm a bachelor so this is one of the priveleges. lol! Finally, I became serious with this hobby starting 2013. So, I am just catching up with you guys.

Just updated to FW 1.24.

Seems pleasant enough sounding. Listened to a few songs

Upper mids and upwards seems a little more present resulting in better spacial cues.......but still smooth and non- fatiguing.

I am actually hoping that eradicated the pop, when there is no next track at the end of a DSD album, will know that later.

Anyways, good good update.
