Android phones and USB DACs

From what I understand a USB otg cable is required. Not sure why though.

A standard USB DAC operates only as a USB peripheral. It only interworks with a USB host.

The SGS3 is a USB On-The-Go device.
A USB OTG device can act as a USB host or as a USB peripheral.

Simply put, a USB OTG device, like the SGS3, acts as
. a USB peripheral when a Micro-B plug is inserted [regular cable]
. a USB host when a Micro-A plug is inserted ["OTG cable"]

SGS3 as USB peripheral:
. SGS3 – regular cable – PC / Mac as USB host
. SGS3 – regular cable – upcoming specific Android Jelly Bean-compliant USB DAC as USB host

SGS3 as USB host:
. SGS3 – "OTG cable" – USB mouse as USB peripheral
. SGS3 – "OTG cable" – standard USB DAC as USB peripheral

One cable running from device to device would be nice but I could only get it working with two cables

An "OTG cable": Micro-A to Mini-B cable

An "OTG cable": Micro-A to Mini-B cable http://www.lindy.co.uk/05m-usb-otg-cable-black-type-micro-a-to-mini-b/31957.html[/quote]

That's exactly the type of cable I was looking for! It's really long though! 19" is way too much cable to stuff in your pocket. And idea where I can find one that's like 3ish inches?

Some audio cable specialist, like ALO audio, should provide a short micro-A to mini-B USB OTG cable upon request.

An iDevice-compliant DAC USB to iDevice cable at $150.00:
http://www.aloaudio.com/alo-audio-usb-to-ipod-cable-for-the-algorhythm-solo

That is outrageously overpriced!
I'm gonna have to keep searching for something more affordable. Am I the only one who wants to use a portable amp/dac without a bunch of extra cabling?
A regular otg cable and a usb to mini usb cable just seems excessive.. :-/

I was actually considering making my own. I have a regular micro to mini usb cable, but I'd like to shorten it, and its not an otg host cable. Where can I find some info on how to modify/make my own?

Make your own USB OTG cable:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1806589

Affordable audio cables for portable Android audio rigs will likely come from FiiO or iBasso:

. FiiO:
http://www.head-fi.org/t/604479/good-news-about-android-phone-supports-digital-audio-output

We will design a new Mini USB to Macro USB cable with L type connector so it can be easy installed in Galaxy S2 and our E7/E17.  Also I think it will be a good place to ask if someone can help us to test it when we have the sample cable.

. iBasso:
http://www.ibasso.com/en/products/show.asp?ID=54

Galaxy S3-compliant Epiphany Acoustics EDAC (i.e. ODAC) >> iBasso CB06 High Purity Copper 3.5 to 3.5 Interconnect  >> portable amp Neco V3
http://www.head-fi.org/t/513233/neco-soundlabs-portable-v-2-amp/105#post_8486878

Much more affordable cables will likely come from company like ShenZhen ChengYang Electronic:

Quick question for anyone using a USB DAC/amp with their phone (specifically a Galaxy SIII I suppose): what happens when you're listening and the phone rings? Are you able to answer the call? Is the call audio routed to the front or rear speaker of the phone? Is the standard microphone functioning?

I have been looking around for an answer, but I can't seem to find it.

Whatever music is playing or video pauses and cuts off, and the phone rings. Upon the call ending whatever was playing resumes.

I think he know that, he's asking whether the call is routed to the ear piece or speaker.
