Android phones and USB DACs

Ha ha ha! That was my last year's comment. And TRUE! Nowadays there are many options that WILL defeat that claim. But STILL you need some technical expertise and good equipment. HOWEVER, talking about cost, availability, usability, Android platform is hard to beat. Having devices as Beelink GS-King X or the Khadas platform makes it interesting.

On USB OTG...

I had that experiment years ago..

Finally found this Y cable that could power my DAC from a battery source while taping out/covering (see red tape) the 5V power pin on the USB plug. Well, it worked. It upped the SQ a bit. However, it was cumbersome and heavy (battery pack, for mobile use). This was in 2015.

BUT then I have THIS! LH Lab's REVIVE (black one).

A USB reclocker/regenerator w/ an ultra quiet battery. Been using it since 2016. One of its kind.

Since its difficult to have one nowadays, what I could suggest is a USB purifier on your chain instead. Like iFi Audio's iSilencer+. Its small and will do the job you are wanting for.

And since you are experimenting with an SBC, a good clean power source is also a must (for it will up the SQ of your unit too). To cut costs down for an LPS, i do suggest something like iFi Audio's iPower X.

I did look for better USB (or Y) cables. And have the FiiO CL06 mikeyfresh was talking. But either these cables are too long, too short, incompatible, or expensive to my needs. And to my experience, investing to a USB reclock/regen/purifier has more impact than cables. Of course better if you have both. Especially for desktop setups. But if you're mobile, I tend to go to portability (or simplicity).

Good luck with the hunt.

PS: My LH Revive doubles for desktop and mobile use. It has a micro usb power-in that doubles for charging and as an external source that I attach to an LPS.

Thank you for the guidance. I am trying to design my sbc system as battery powered, and my sbc is allo sparky. The usb power out from the sparky is already fairly filtered with high quality ldo, and the inherent noise from data periodicity is also fairly minimum, they have measurements on their site.

I would try to be on the look out for a Lh labs revive. Seems like the kind of product I'd want.

Thanks.

Tried that too (battery powered Android TV or/with DAC). IME, a good LPS is still better. But will up the cost. But running on battery is definitely better than a SMPS. It makes your system portable too.

I would generally agree that a random smps would be far worse than a LPS, but the best amp I've heard so far uses a complicated type of smps. Implementation >> buzzword. Sounds fabulous : https://www.bursonaudio.com/about-us/max-current-power-supply/

There are few other companies that use SMPS but a high quality variant for great sound. From what I know, benchmark audio also uses a similar supply.

Yeah agree! Chord are using these types i think. They argue that batteries or LPS tends to limit bandwidth. But again those are for bigger more expensive setups. I'm talking DIY/Hobby, SBC level here.

I'm not sure if I can diy this, but burson fun, the whole amp costs less than 200$, so pretty possible to just design the power supply alone within a reasonable amount. I guess we are diverging away from music players too much at this point lol. Any other thread where we can take further conversations?

Check out the E1DA, about 55 bucks. Needs a bit of current though and gets a bit warm.

It doesn't matter whether it's our iPurifier or a reclocker by a different company, but such products can be effective enough to be easily audible. As for iPurifier, it's a reclocker alright, but iSilencer+ serves a different purpose, it cuts noise incoming from a source.

Do you have an alternative to lh labs revive?. With a built in battery, 5v generator and signal regenerator?

None of our reclockers is powered by batteries. Micro iUSB3.0 generates its own 5V, but needs to be externally powered.

Now I have decided to order the Topping D30, and E30 after all.
I am curious how they will sound on Sirrah v3.0 + SL507 :)

Has anyone here compared the d30 with the e30?

Skimming thru the latter part of this thread, I see some have attempted to do what I have done and have reported a similar issue but I have yet to see a recommended solution be a confirmed fix. No, I have not gone thru this ENTIRE thread. Due to regular upgrades to Android, I figure since this thread goes a ways back, prior possible solutions may not fit considering the changes to the os and tech. With all that being said...

I purchased a Tracfone - Motorola G6 - for the purpose of using it as a digital transport. I threw in a 256gb card, purchased UAPP and married it to a Topping NX4 using one of the oft recommended FiiO C to micro cables. Everything works beautifully except for one thing, the phone will not go into a deep sleep while connected to the NX4. With disabling as many apps and services as possible, I've gotten it down to a little under 1% an hour. Has anyone found a way to stop this unnecessary drain? I even went to the extent of buying yet another Tracfone with a micro port vs C since I read C introduced bi-directional power flow. No difference. I've been at this for a while now. Considered rooting the device and installing a custom ROM to see if I could fine tune a setting but hesitant going down THAT rabbit hole since my research has yet to lead me, with any confidence, to believe it would be the answer.

I'm starting to think people are living with a 1%/hour drain since they are typically charging their phones overnight. This was to be my dedicated mobile listening solution. The G6 is never going to be used as a phone. Perhaps that is my issue. I'm trying to use a device for a purpose it was not intended for.

I'm guessing the ifi smps would do a good job of powering the iusb 3.0.

Yup, it would :)

I checked the micro iusb 3.0. looks great. A bit expensive for me at the moment though.

Our most affordable reclocker - iPurifier3 - is a "baby" nano iUSB3.0, which is a "baby" micro iUSB3.0. Different performance levels and prices, but the same core job.
