Well as much as I want to, I want it to run it off its own battery. But this is what the seller had told me:

I don't really know how bad it is but I'm taking precaution since the parts you need for it is around $20 total with a decent 2800 mah USB battery anyway. Not bad if it means extended hours of listening through this portable setup!

 
Ah, gotcha! Makes sense now. To my knowledge (happy to be corrected if I'm mistaken), I don't believe the D-Zero pulls current from the phone when playing unless it's set to charge. I didn't listen to mine for any extreme listening sessions, as I recall, but I don't remember the battery draining any faster with the D-Zero hooked up (charge off) than without it. Of course, this was with the S3, which didn't have stellar battery life to begin with-- but that would seem to make it more susceptible to battery drain. 
 
I'll keep my fingers crossed that you don't have any issues, but as you mentioned, it doesn't appear to be a big financial hurdle to covering your bases either way. Definitely keep us informed on how you get on .

I use my phone at home on the go but I found that Dell tablet and its dock interesting for home use because this is how my set-up looks like at home:
 


 
Before I saw that Dell tablet I was planning on using the Galaxy Note, which has the advantage of having its sync port on the wide side - a music player app in landscape means I can have album art on one side and a track list (or even content navigation) on the other half, depending on the player of course. The Dell tablet has that, plus a dock that I think should make it easy to add additional storage (will still keep my Android and its microSD for use on the go of course) where my music can be, since it has an Atom processor and a full MS Office suite, I think I can use it in place of my laptop as well. I'll just have to not have any light gaming on this tablet netbook (well, maybe a PS emulator for Marvel Superheroes and Battle Arena Toshinden), and get used to firing up the gaming rig when I edit photos (no matter how much more convenient a built in SD card reader on a laptop is vs my next build, which will use cases that don't even have ODD slots, ergo no flush-fitting card readers either).
 
Of course I'll wait and see first, especially since my laptop is still working great. I don't really replace my laptops until not even a reformat can make them run smoothly (newer apps take more power, processor is really worn from all-nighters and these don't have the same coolers as on desktops, etc).

For OTG cables, I bought a .5m Lindy Mini B to Micro B cable for 7GBP. It works fine and isn't as long as I expected it to be. Would have preferred a shorter cable but the cheapest I could find was 45 euros. I'm using velcro to keep the HRT microstreamer attached to my laptop/phone. Be careful not to buy too strong of velcro though. I bought the strongest strength and it's overkill. The velcro is easy enough to remove and clean off the clue if you want to resell.

I can confirm the iDSD Nano works with an unrooted Google Nexus 7 2013 on stock Android 4.4,
USB OTG cable and USB Audio Player Pro software required.
LED color on iDSD corresponds with actual output as well.
It's a shame I can't use Neutron player.

iDSD Nano also working with stock unrooted Note 3, does not require UAPP and works with all players. Not yet tried a DSD test file from UAPP though.

How is it compared to the Audioquest Dragonfly?
 
The UD100 used the same ESS-Sabre Chip, and therefore shouldn't work without the use of UAPP, but what about the PCM5102-based DACs?
Would be great if someone tried them both out

The Xperia Z using USB Audio Player PRO (UAPP) should work with a Sabre U2 Asynchronous USB DAC without using a powered USB hub because:

i received mi hifimedy u2 but i can't get it to work.
the app uapp tells me that it can't get enaught power. could try with a hub but then it is not portable enought for me :s
does anybody have an idea.
the dac worked with a note 3.

You could try attaching the U2 via OTG to the phone, then restart the phone with the DAC attached, see if it will power it then. I've no evidence to support that it will, but you'll never know it doesn't unless you check.
 
Be advised that on my phone, Moto G, all of the phones audio (music, video, games, ringtones, notifications, alarms etc.) is routed to my USB DAC (Stoner Accoustics UD110) when restarted with the DAC attached. I never did get around to checking if incoming calls could be heard thru the DAC or if the mic would work with the DAC attached from boot. Oh and video can act a bit weird (playback is sped up) after booting with USB attached, but having said that I am unable to reproduce it on my phone just now.
 
I've effectively retired my Moto G as a "phone" proper nowadays, and instead stuck a data SIM inside, and just use it as a DAP with a mobile internet connection (Spotify Premium by and large) that I attach to a powered hub when using a DAC so that it won't totally thrash the phones battery.
