I can confirm the iDSD Nano works with an unrooted Google Nexus 7 2013 on stock Android 4.4,
USB OTG cable and USB Audio Player Pro software required.
LED color on iDSD corresponds with actual output as well.
It's a shame I can't use Neutron player.

Throw Cyanogenmod on it. It's pretty close to stock and adds native USB audio support as well as USB OTG drive mounting that supports exFAT without having to install stickmount. I'm currently running CM11 snapshot M6 on my N7 2013 and it works great with PowerAmp and Fiio e17 and e07k.

the only testimony was with a custom kernel on a nexus 7.

  i received mi hifimedy u2 but i can't get it to work.
the app uapp tells me that it can't get enaught power. could try with a hub but then it is not portable enought for me :s
does anybody have an idea.

A Xperia Z powered by some version of O.S. can drive the FiiO E17, which requires 500 mA: may be the max power is a parameter of the Xperia Z's O.S., and this parameter doesn't always have the same value.

You should ask the guy who posted the Xperia Z - FiiO E17 compatibility information about the version of Android of his Xperia Z.

The Android version of my mobile phone is : Android Jelly Bean (4.1.2)
i have an nuforce icon dac (with akg k550 headphones).
In the manual guide of nuforce icon dac is :
supported android devices-
SONY Xperia Z and newer version, and other mobile devices
-supports windows 7,windows 8,mac osx,android 4.1.1
android compatibility is limited to smart phones running android 4.1.1. that support usb otg audio and requires using a correct
otg cable for connection
 
ive connected today the dac with my mobile phone through an usb otg adapter and when i let the music play
from my mobile device ,the music started to play through the speakers on my mobile phone not through the dac
(i didnt set  or click anything on my mobile phone)
Should i set or change something on the mobile phone so that the music will play through the dac or isnt there anything else i can do?
Maybe it isnt possible to play music through the dac with that mobile device?

Apparently, the Xperia M doesn't have a native USB audio feature.
It could work with the NuForce Icon DAC when using the USB Audio Player PRO (UAPP) app, which includes its own USB audio soft driver.
There is a free trial version of UAPP available on Google Play store.
 
You may need to insert a USB hub between the Xperia M and the NuForce Icon DAC if the Icon DAC requires too much power for the Xperia M.
Like Apple iDevices, non-flagship Sony devices used to refuse to directly connect to a USB DAC which requires 500 mA (max power required).

You tried the same CM11 M6 on a N5? I am having issues with M6 and JDSlabs C5D... I'll have to make some time to delve into it more.

I got the Nexus 5 & C5D working with cm-11-20140518-EXPERIMENTAL-hammerhead.zip 
It's an experimental, not a snapshot; let's see how stable it is.
 
Edit: can connect & disconnect without any issue. C5D bass boost & TPEOS H-300 is too much fun

Very interesting topic this. I use my Samsung S3 together with my Zero DAC for more than a year. My music collection is on a NAS (WD Mybooklive) that I can access via my wifi router. I use apps like bubbleupnp and more recently twonky beam to stream my music. Unfortunately these apps have to deal with an annoying android bug for playback of FLAC files in the playlist (https://forums.plex.tv/index.php/topic/103881-bug-flac-music-playback-is-broken/). Nevertheless I am very confident with the low cost (only components used that I already own), easy navigating and good quality music.
 
The only point that can be improved in the usabiliy is to get rid of the USB (OTG) cable between my S3 and my DAC. For headphone use this is not really a problem but for music via loudspeakers you need a long cable across the room.  I've done some experiments with a second android device and  I succeeded in a cordless setup:
Android 1: App Twonky beam (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pv.twonkybeam&hl=nl) installed, gathers the music from the NAS and 'beams' the music file to a upnp client on android 2 by the wifi network
Android 2: App Airpin (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.waxrain.airplayer&hl=nl) a upnp client, installed, receives the music files and sends them via USB to the DAC.
 
Android 2 must be a native USB audio supported device.  I tried this with USB audio player pro but this didn't succeeded. Android 1 doesn't need USB audio at all. If you don't have an additional Android device you can consider to buy an 'android stick' but I don't have any idea if these are available with native USB audio support.
 
Anyway I hope I have contributed some new ideas to this wonderfull forum.

To quickly answer one portion: I believe there are Android sticks (or, in my case, the Minix Neo X7 Android mini-PCs) that will support external USB DACs. Or, of course, one could put one of the USB Audio-supporting custom ROMs on there to make it work .
