If you pair one with a Dragonfly Red (as I intend to do) I doubt any DAP can touch it under $500. Maybe the Cayin N5 ($500) or the Onkyo DAP, which I believe is $500-600.

This does highlight the issue of lack of any digital transport-only devices on the market. The cheapest DAP with digital output costs twice as much as the S3 in Poland.

I decided to dust off my 'old' Ray Samuels Predator amp with build in DAC and having hard time getting it recognized on Samsung S4 running Slim 6.0.1 Marshmallow ROM. I played with the USB options in the developer settings but no go. Plugged in the phone to my Dell XPS 15 (another cable) and it was recognized right away with no issues. Output switches to USB audio DAC and I'm immersed in the music nirvana...
Predator uses USB Mini-B connector and need standard type-A for the notebook. Any recommendation as to specific cables I can buy on ebay or Amazon or are there some other setting or issues on the phone / OS side?
Thanks for help
to add, there is no response on the phone at all, no messages/errors etc.
No, You misunderstood me. I already am using an Android phone with a USB DAC. But as of now it is pretty inconvenient especially if one intends to use the phone while listening to music.
"portable setup" lol
What I meant is that it's a pretty good idea to buy a separate phone (the Galaxy S3) in order to use it as a digital transport only since it seems to be cheaper than buying a DAP with digital output.

Hmm... I have am older HTC M8 that I replaced with an HTC10. I actually like the sound of the 10 without a dac, but I'm sure the M8 with an external dac would sound better. I always found the M8 difficult to get to connect to a dac, though. Maybe rooted?

That's precisely why this thread is so helpful. I had an M8 previously. It was super flaky with DACs. There are some developer options you can tweak that will help. I don't recall what settings they are, unfortunately.
HI, I'm quite confused about this topic, I hope any of you can help me. My only phone is an android ver 4.4.2 Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 "Inch" (stock) doesn't immediately work my Fiio Q1 using USB OTG, only with music player app like Hiby or Onkyo HF player does it work, but that's far from perfect and I can't use the external DAC for what I most do: Streaming from Spotify and Youtube. Is there a way to make it work? as the Headphone out of the Samsung is just suck.......

It's a while since I tried, but you needed to use an external power supply to connect up the whole thing (have a Denon DSD-10, like it, easier to use but I don't think it connected well with the M8. Try it again, though...)
