Android phones and USB DACs

Not really that hit and miss with UAPP...

Yes in Android Audio, with respect to external DAC or DAC/Amp support, IS AND STILL a Hit and Miss.

Lately, there are more frequent hits than misses as I have experienced from the past.

However, these hit and misses even until now (esp. on OS and App updates/upgrades), led me to go back to DAP.

It is an interesting concept. Bought two for the fun: M2tech Hiface w/ Headstage 4G as amp and Geek Out 1000.

But at the end I just want to:

1. Something that works

2. Something dedicated that I could pick up: Phone is Phone. DAP is DAP.
Not that I will connect, disconnect, reconnect, push a lot of buttons, configure and reconfigure
in order to just have my way in music.

I may have an extra smartphone dedicated to music but that will be bulky for me (Smartphone + DAC/Amp + OTG).

That's true, but one of the primary advantages in using a phone for transport (for me anyway) is the ability to stream music to an external device. You can't do that with UAPP at the moment and as my current smartphone is a Galaxy S5 running Android 5.0 which is widely reported to be hit and miss it makes sense for me to buy a DAP.

Unless someone can suggest a workaround that I'm not aware of?

A few weeks ago I acquired this:

http://www.amazon.com/HiFiMeDIY-Android-Digital-Converter-PCM2706/dp/B00FJSEAZ4/ref=sr_1_1

Using it with my Galaxy S4 (Lollipop 5.0.1) either straight into headphones or into an amp.  Works great with UAPP or Spotify/Tidal.  Nice clean sound.  I auctioned off my Fiio X1 after getting this because I feel I no longer need it.  Don't miss it at all actually.

I use the same device when using my Cayin C5 and love it.

Many of us have a few daps and our phone. On the move most of the time it's more convenient for one device which inevitably becomes a phone. This is because you can listen to music and take a phone call without fuss. The phone now muscles in on home use with otg technology now they can connect with tv or dac or portable hard disc.
I understand the posters who say about how fiddly this can be because I have yet to connect my tv and dac or hdd and dac which is what I'd really like to do.
Also I'd like to see hiby or usb audio pro to support lyrics as these are the only apps that support my otg through the Cambridge Audio DacMagic Plus and my Note II. It would be great if the Samsung Music App would support Otg because this does it all otherwise.
That being said, since I bought the Note II 3 and a half years ago it has become better and better as a device and otg for me is a recent discovery. It's like having a new audio device!
Perhaps the best thing about otg is it confirmed for me there was no need to replace my phone for the latest model. The note II does it all.
When I first looked into compatability between phone and dac this was no more than a discussion. How far things have moved since then. Well done to everyone who made this happen, you've made a huge difference.

I've searched a long time for possibility to change volume of my usb DAC (Dragonfly v1.2) without UAPP. And finally found working solution. I can use Spotify and PowerAmp with DAC now. Maybe somebody here needs this too.

Your device should run Lollipop and MUST be rooted.
You need to download a binary "tinymix" from xda-developers.
Unpack and copy the binary to /system/xbin, permission should be 744 (rwx r-- r--).
Then in terminal execute as root: tinymix -D 1
You should see your DAC (mine is AudioQuest DragonFly) and mixer control name (mine is "PCM Playback Volume")
Now via tinymix -D 1 "PCM Playback Volume" you can see volume range of your device. (mine is 0-50)
Now you should be able to change volume with: tinymix -D 1 "PCM Playback Volume" X (X is volume)

I made simple Tasker widget to control volume "on the fly".

Good luck :)

Encore mDAC USB DAC/amp:
"Encore mDAC turns your mobile device into a high-end player."
http://www.encore-av.com/main/products/dac-series/mdac-detail

"Really a nice product. This little box is just as good (in fact better) than devices at 2/3 times the price.
I was a bit skeptical as there were no reviews but decided to give it a trial. All I can say is WOW!!
Used with the Galaxy S4 and USB Audio Player PRO the difference between the native player and the combination above, the sound quality is markedly superior; Deeper, cleaner bottom end, fantastic clarity on the upper end and let's not forget an incredible soundstage.
Used with the Shure 535 or 846, I would doubt that you'd be disappointed."

A micro USB OTG cable is included in the box.
