Android phones and USB DACs

That could be an issue with the E18 and GS5, sounds quite irritating, what about SQ wise, did you ever compare these android devices to DAP's?

Only informally. I did some in-depth comparisons between various DAC/amps, but never between a DAC/amp and my DAP (DX50). My back-of-the-napkin note between the DX50 (and the Leckerton UHA-6S MkII that I use with it as an amp) and the various phone > DAC/amp combos (other than the noise issue noted above) would be that the DX50/UHA-6S is both technically better and more enjoyable, but not by a huge margin, and if you're listening while in a car, plane, etc the differences could be completely washed out. If you're listening at home or in other quiet situations, though, I'd say the difference would be noticeable, if not gigantic.

I should also note that even when listening to the DX50/UHA-6S, if I get a phone/tablet/whatever near the devices or the cable to my IEMs, I get very noticeable interference. Apparently cellular radios just hate nearby audio circuits...

With the new android version l I finally got my Audioquest Dragonfly to work :) However there is only one volume available which is a little too loud for me. It is either that our no volume. In other words the volume slider does not work

It's that way with all dacs. The program USB Audio Player Pro takes care of that with software volume. Not sure if there is a way around it if you want to use your dac for anything but music.

Does it play 16/44.1 music files and output 16/44.1 PCM stream?
The legacy Android media player framework can only output 16/48.

Does it play 24/96 music files and output 24/96 PCM Stream?

The LED indicator of the AudioQuest DragonFly shows the resolution of the incoming PCM stream: 44.1kHz, 48kHz, 88.2kHz, 96kHz.

96 kHz high resolution audio can be freely downloaded from 2L:

Testing my nexus 5 with android L 5.0, usb audio now works perfectly!!

What is your USB DAC?

Thanks!

Thank you so, so, so so much! I reckon it's worth me grabbing the DX50 then, I'll make some impressions of it against an iPod Touch, iPod Classic(s), and my GS5, and then paired with a entry JDS Labs CmoyBB amp to help out anyone else asking these hard-to-find comparisons!

No prob man, happy to help. Just one more note, the general consensus (at least in the handful of posts I've read, someone please correct me if I'm mistaken) is that the DX90 is a significant improvement over the DX50, and given the relatively reasonable price point, it might make sense to pick up a DX90 over a DX50. Check it out and see if that jives with your research, but it's just something worth considering IMO.

And yeah man, definitely post your impressions once you get a chance to compare these suckers! I know I won't be the only guy looking forward to reading 'em!

Yeah, that was the original plan, but I may be able to get a DX50 for £120 from a Head-Fier, whereas the DX90 is £290. I will do! I'm very interested in how they all compare too!

I'm not sure about it streaming PCM as I was only playing 16/44.1 files. The LED indicator was green however. Anyways the USB Audio Player Pro does not read the Dragonfly (I have version 1.0) even though the firmware did. Unfortunately, I had to go back to Kit Kat the L version broke many apps.
