IMO the K701's do bass very well. Its tight deep and punchy. Its not overblown like the Denons and Sennheiser HD650 so if you want massive amount of bass, whether its on the recording or not then they won't be right for you. The k701/2 are the same phones just different color and one has a detachable cable. Never heard the K601 but the 701/2's are supposed to have more bass.

The K701 has good bass, just not monster subeterranean bass head bass.

If you are looking for stronger bass head impact you want the K518 DJ or the K181 DJ. The K701 has different strengths.

I think it depends on what type of music the OP will be listening to. If he's listening to jazz or classical where you want very accurate bass, the k70X will deliver exactly that...very realistic and lifelike. If he's listening to hip hop and wants real slammin bass that will loosen the fillings in his teeth, then they will fall a little short. But for rock, jazz, classical, acoustic, they are superb providing you have a good amp.

I think part of the problem is that people have unrealistic expectations of bass from headphones.  These drivers are only about 1" in diameter where subwoofers are commonly 8" and up.  The larger the sureface area the deeper the sound.  If pounding bass is what you are after I would just invest in a good 2.1 system then crawl under the table and let the bass boom!

Not necessarily. Beats Studios can deliver pounding bass when matched with the right amp.

Equation RP21 delivers the goods with hip hop. But they don't come close to the k70X for other genres.
