AKG K701/K702 vs. AKG Q701?

[...]

I have no headphone amp/soundcard for PC/DAC/X1 etc.
Just a cheap mp3/flac player, laptop and a Yamaha RXV-475 AVR/PS3 for Films

Q.  Would it be a waste getting such a high end product, I would use them for Music-some film watching. Is the build quality good?

Q. I can get the AKG 551's/AKG Pro 612's for much cheaper, has anyone heard them all?

I own K702, K500, and until a few weeks ago, K612. Given your application and source material, I'd strongly suggest the K612. It's the most forgiving out of the bunch and would be a better match for your receiver. Good luck.

£120 AKG Q 701
£105 AKG Pro 612
£70   AKG 551

Hi Shaffer, these are the price differences, the 551's are closed but i can't try any of them out (that i've found yet anyway). Why did you get rid of the 612's? My only concern is that it is described in some reviews as having a bit more "bass and musicality" which is a problem i had with the UE 6000's, of course this may have been reviews directly comparing the 612's and 701's.
Thanks.

A friend liked the K612 a lot more than I did, so I gave them to him. The K612 is warmer sounding than the K702 and a bit less resolving, which in your case is a plus (given the source material). The K702 is a relatively thread-bare sounding piece, so keep that in mind regarding the comparison.

Thanks, for some reason i seem a bit hung up on the removable cable, but the 612 looks good. Did your 612/702 work at all well with low impedance sources, mp3 type devices, still struggling with the impedance/Ohms aspect. cheers.

I don't have any MP3/portable devices. Can't really answer the question. Sorry.

They are the same except audio specs and components except for the Q on the ear peace… I have both par my K701s have a more natural sound because they are burned in and older, The Qs are a tad more aggressive on the mids and highs but again its because they are new and not used much. I just got them as a back up. The 701s are the best phones I had under 1500.00 as for as natural sound in concerned. What you hear is what it is. If the mids are harsh the mids were mixed harsh, if the bass in muddy the bass was mixed muddy. I mix and master for a living and needed a good set of un colored phones and these are the ones, actually more accurate  than my AKG k812s

I totally agree.  having a hard time deciding whether to sell my K812 or sell my K701.  Despite knowing my K701 is better for the job.  I still have my T90...which is more revealing than both of them.....so i may keep my K812 as my "fun" headphone.

K701 is really an all-time great.

I recently purchased a Q701 and I must say it is a pleasure to listen to although I am still on the lookout for a portable amp to drive it properly whilst on the move. The only niggle I have is the bumpy headband and the fact that the stock cable are rather long. I would have liked a short and a long cable.

I must have the only K701 that is warmer than a Q701.  Even swapping the pads and foams, it's still obviously warmer.  Both are Austria versions.  The K has a lot more hours on it than the Q, but the Q isn't new.  Maybe I'll try that 1000 hours of burn-in I've heard about.

Anyway, just odd.
