Has anyone tried the AKG K701's with the Fiio E7 only ( no E9 amp )?
 
I'm thinking about picking one up, but if it's underpowered I might look elsewhere.  I'm not a big fan of the dock type look of the E7+E9 combo.

If it works well, and from what I understand, the E9 works very well, who cares what it looks like. You can bury the amp's internals in a pile of dog crap for all I care as long as it sounds good. I don't sit there staring at my amp while I am listening to music...I'm too busy actually listening to music to care about shallow things like the aesthetics of my gear.

Who stares at amps anyways? Most amps look ugly, and I find Fiio the nicest ones around
E7 is not enough to power HD600, so I believe its no good for these either.

The E7 will not fully power the K701 but the E9 will..
but with K701 the better the amp the better they shine

True, E7 is not enough, E9 is a wonderful amp
Both are a great bang for the buck, especially the combo deal, but 701 needs more juice than E7. E7 makes a decent DAC though.

I know this is against the norm, but I preferred the fun sound the E7 (with bass boost 3) gave the K701, over the analytical sound (and well driven) of the K701 with the E9.
 
However, the E7 with BB3 completely alters the K701 sound to something more in line with headphones worth half of the K701.
