It shouldn't harm them. They'll be slightly more exposed and that's about it.

The thread lives again!!!

My "go-to" headphone choice changes frequently, but after all these years, the K601 still grab their fair share of time on my melon.  I have 4 full-sized headphones, and I enjoy each one of them and they each serve a purpose for me.  For the amount I would need to spend in order to take the next step, I'd be better off saving money and putting together a nice, budget dedicated CD-player, amp, and speaker set-up.

For the first time in my head-fi journey, I feel happy and satisfied with my headphones. Now I need to invest in some proper desk amps to make the most out of them. :)

Depends on whether you find any worth in recabling anyway, though I know a lot of K701 users like to. As for difficulty, it won't be that easy given the design of the headphones. First of all, if your cable/fitting is wider than the current one, you'll have to cut the hole it goes into larger, and if you want it double ended, you'll have to cut a hole into the other side entirely. I don't think getting the headphones apart is particularly fun, but certainly doable. Take a look at any K701 topics on recabling if you can find them; the K601 is very similar in design and, as far as I am aware, opens up exactly the same way.

What would be interesting is if anyone runs a balanced K601.

Is it worth recabling these headphones? also is it difficult to do? I'm not much into DIY.

I bought mine -#13885- from estreeter a few months ago and I am happy so far with their performance being driven by an old Yamaha SS integrated as well as my very portable Headstage Arrow 12HE.

I am also interested in a desktop amp to combine with an AudioGD DAC19 MkIII I'm buying this week.  The Doge 6210 looks interesting but I think that this combination may be too syrupy.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Has anyone listened to the K601's with Lehmann Rhinelander amp? I'm trying to find an amp for my headphones and the Rhinelander is one option I'm considering.

It would be nice if the amp had decent bass since I mostly listen to trance/hardcore etc. electronic music.

Hrmmm I'm very intrigued by this thread. I own a pair of k702, but was originally looking for the warm AKG feel i got out of my k240s, which were my first serious pair of headphones. Any wanna make a match and say these are similar? If I end up buying these I'm fairly confident they're gonna be recabled, which means balanced.  Would I be the first to balance these guys?

Well they should be closer than the K702, but how much I can't say having read only limited impressions of the K240S. And yes, you'd be the first person on Head-Fi to state they have balanced them at least, if not the first person to have done it out-right. It would be very interesting to see how balancing the K601 changes them.
