AKG K601 & K612 Pro Owners... UNITE!!

Glad you are enjoying them. I think the 601 combined with 701/702 pads really outperforms the 702. A hidden gem!

Not to mention they are much more comfortable because of the lack of headband bumps and look better than the 700 series.

I don't have any other AKG cans to compare my k601s to, but I have to say I've been listening to them at home almost exclusively since I got them new a month ago. There's something addictive about them, maybe the soundstage or delineation of instruments and voices. The grey pads that come with them seem quite nice - how do the 701/702 pads improve things? I cannot complain about the $149 I spent for them, new! Now maybe an Aune T1 or X1 can make even more sonic improvement over a stock HP soundcard. Or maybe some other reasonably-priced DAC/amp?

The 701/702 pads help in many ways. I have a write-up in this thread somewhere but here are the basics:
Improved soundstage and imaging.
Improved frequency response. Deeper bass and more extended treble.
A flatter frequency response across the whole range.
More comfort due to larger pad openings; wont touch your ears at all.

In an online shop I found two different replacement ear pads for the K702: a normal one at 16 Euro a piece, and a "gel" one for 49 euro a piece?? What is this? Do you know what is the difference and if the price is justified?

The akg service manuals are available online and have the part numbers. I emailed akg and got a quote for the 701 pads a few months ago. Here's what i received:

2458M12010                       $24.66 ea

The 702 versions would be a similar cost most likely. These are not the gel versions. I haven't heard of them before and im not sure the price is justified.

As long as the 16 euro version is a genuine akg part, go for it. Otherwise I would order from akg directly.

Thanks Punnisher.
Just to make sure I got it: are the 701 and 702 pads identical?
If so I will as AKG to send me a quote for the 702 pads.

EDIT: the k702 pads have part number 2458M12020, which is different from the ones of the K701...

...I'll try my 612 with 702 pads later today.

They are different part numbers because of the color. I use the 702 pads on my 601. Also, I don't know if there's a physical difference between 601 pads and 612 pads so can't make any guarantees for the 612.

If you're referring to the K7xx series, the 702 pads are angled and the 701 pads are not. Not sure if that's what you're talking about. :)

Most photos I've seen indicate otherwise. Are you certain? It could be that later 701 models were changed to the angled pads

Well Shaffer, I'm really looking forward to your test.
It looks like so far you are the first to try it.
I'll wait to read your comments before buying the new pads.

Yes. That's why the pads have different part numbers.
