AKG K601 & K612 Pro Owners... UNITE!!

Sometime this summer I plan to get a pair of open headphones and have narrowed my search down to the k612 or dt880. The k612 would be paired with a racoon sg300 and the dt880 with a vali. I mostly listen to modern rock(bands such as Muse, three days grace) metal and hard rock, and game, movie, and anime osts all at 320 kbps mp3. I also do a good bit of gaming. Which setup sounds like it would work best for me? My current cans are the soundmagic hp150 which I absolutely love. Thanks for any help.

I don't think you can go wrong with either.  If the DT880 in question is the 600-ohm version, then go for it.  If you are considering a 250-ohm Beyer, I would take K612 over that, but that's just me.

I guess the analog output of racoon sg300 is class AB. a class A output might be a better choice

The O2 looks to be the universal "budget" choice, I see no particular reason to not go for it ....

If you can pick one up used the Keces HA-171 amp works magic with my K612's. My LDMKIII drives them fine but I prefer the Keces. I tried them with my O2 but don't remember off hand how that went.

1. for ultimate SQ, class A is the only choice, not even dynamic biased
2. in fact, class A is a good complement to k612 for warmer, smoother and more liquid sound signatures.

I think class A is maybe slightly overrated, I've owned several fullsized stereo amps utilizing pure class A and I've never been struck by any awesomeness or superiority. Quite simply, either a amp is good(well designed) or not regardless of technology used. Class A is just the simplest way(for the engineer) to remove crossover distorsion, at the cost of heat, electricity and durability, The said crossover distorsion can be reduced enough to not be noticeable using more complicated techniques than just pure class A, but requires slightly more skill by the constructor. And there are many other types of distorsion and colourations that may affect a certain amp more than the amount of constant bias applied. For me class A is mostly a buzzword amongst many.

Most high class stereo amps do have some constant bias turned on, to reduce distorsion at low level listening, up to 1-5W or so for full sized systems. I'm not talking about headphone amps here. When playing very loud the amount of competing distorsion types rises quickly, like cone breakup, resonances and acoustic distorsions etc etc etc so that any miniscule amount of crossover dist may be impossible to detect anyway.

The other disadvantage of Class A is that it uses a lot of power--constantly. That's one reason I got rid of my Asgard 2. It's a darn heater when left on.
