I don't know? I've never owned an x-can.

Anyone here listened to the second generation varimotion drivers K501 compared to the original K501? What differences might there be?

Ok, this is not as easy as I thought. Like many here, I have a little stash (K240S, K501, SR-404, MDR-7506). At some point, I had some of those exotic AT woodies. However, the K501 invariably were the ones been connected to the Headmaster. The only serious contenders were the SR-404. So to make a long story short, the K501 were doing it for me.

When the K701 were announced, it sort of look like another FOM. But in time, curiosity got the better part of me and I bought a pair. Out of the box, I was disappointed. But in time they got better. There is nothing wrong with them, they are great cans and it is easy to see why so many like them.

But guess what is still connected to the Headmaster: K501.

I will let the K701 burn a bit more. I am guessing they have about 150 hours now. If I recall, the K501 took a very long time.

the K501 is such a great phone, IMO and it really let me in on the possibilities of headphones

however...i've since gotten the K701 and i have about 175 hours on them and they, IMO, best the K501 in almost every way - sorry! - just sold off my K501 but i will always remember them...

I personally think you can enjoy the K501 out of anything, but you will probably notice a lack of bass impact running it out of anything less than a proper desktop amp with some serious power.

Sometimes you can't give it away...and sometimes you can't find one no matter how much money you offer...

Somehow, I get the feeling that in few years, some golden ears reviewer will rediscover them and and they will be the hot thing to have. I just like them, bass or not.

Update:

I've been listening to a 500 with an Original Master amp, which really brings the bass, and the 500 is now very nicely balanced. When using that amp with the later model 501, which is really has bass, it's almost too much bass - seriously.

Basically if you have a regular/bass light 501 that Original Master is the value amp for you.
