Yesterday, I received some information from Harman International on the part number, availability, and price of certain pieces of the AKG K3003i, so I thought I'd post it here in case others found it useful. For items that are not now available, you can go to the Harman website and place your name on a waiting list, and they will email you when the part is in stock. You can then order it with your credit card number and day and evening phone numbers.

Not bad for a cable replacement!

Thanks for that. Item 1 in the diagram shows that the earphones without accessories can be purchased as a spare part for $193. Is that right?

What are the conditions? Do you need to send back your faulty ones or can we buy it without submitting an rma?

Not necessary. The difference between the two cables was night and day.

Ha-ha!

I on the other hand am a big believer in what cables bring to the audio chain.

Tested them before friends and they can now attest to the same.

I will tomorrow join this august Order Of The World's Most Expensive Universal Fit In-Ear Monitor ("OOTWMEUFIEM," pronounced "oot-yum-oo-fyum"), as my own AKG K3003i arrive in the mail.

So I have been reading all 118 pages of this thread, as well as other things I can find, to build my excitement as I wait.

I found this discussion of cables, so I was determined to contribute to the Headphonology Archives (or "HA!") with a controlled scientific experiment to determine what cables bring to the audio chain.

I did a blind test, with the cases shown photographically as follows.  These use the T-PEOS H200 IEM (as I don't yet have my K3003i's yet!):

Case A

Case B

I inserted the IEMs from Case A and listened to my set of test music (approximately 15 min and four songs - details provided on request). I took copious notes, then, while blindfolded, switched to the IEMs of Case B.  I again took notes.

Here is the summary of my result:

Case
Description of Case Conditions
Listening Results
A
Cables usedHeard music
B
Cables removedDid not hear music

So as a result of these objective tests, I must agree with what sp3llv3xit and others have reported:

Cables make a difference.

You're welcome... it was nothing.  Please resume your activities.

Thank you! Guess after all I have to change my mind about cables. Obviously they do make a difference!

(Absolutely hilarious!)

AFAIK, I haven't seen or heard of refurbished units. You do indeed send yours in first, but my guess is that you'll get a new unit in return. Or at least that's what they've done so far under warranty.

In my experience with other vendors they reserve the right to ship you a reconditioned one, but in all likelihood these units are too difficult to work on and repair, so they probably ship a new one anyway. It is good to hear that is your experience as I absolutely hate the idea of a reconditioned IEM!

Yes, I really don't think these things were meant to be repaired, but rather replaced. This is what gets me even more interested in how SACD-Man did it, and how much of a pain it was to even open them? Yikes!

I've put that same question to Harman (twice) and have not heard back.  My suspicion is that I have to open up a new trouble ticket and ask, rather than add as a follow-on to the first inquiry!  I will post here when I find out.

  yep. me too!

Sorry... didn't ask about all of the parts (should have!).  I'm sure an email with the picture to harman will get you an answer.
