AKG K240 Sextett--Grado'd AKG?
Sep 13, 2020 at 6:18 PM Post #1,396 of 1,737
Great story! How do the K 340’s sound compared to the sextetts?
I never heard about the K 240R? Do you have a link to some info about these?
You didnt ask me but I own all 3 sextett variations, the K340 as well as the K240 DF.
IMO the K340 is the worst of the lot....by far. Poor design makes it nearly impossible to get a good seal on an already bright and bass light headphone.

If you can find a K340 for under 75.00 then perhaps grab it to satisfy the itch otherwise I'd skip it.
On the other hand @richard51 loves his pair after some modding soYMMV

Thanks for your reply! The local ( dutch / mostly german ) prices for the K 340 are now like 75 - 100 euro. Last week i saw one for 50....
But if they don’t sound good i’m not gonna spend any money on it. I already sold a K 280 and a K 400 because i didn’t like the sound of them.

i just saw a video on youtube of the band Toto jamming in a studio. I looks like they all are using sextetts?

Yeah theres a photo of American basketball legend,Magic Johnson, DJing in his home back in the early 80s and he's rocking Sextetts as well.

What is with the hair tonic! lol... I have 2 MP sets that reek of the stuff too. I enjoy the K140's quite a bit as well... my older set seems to have a touch of sextett vibe, in spite of a lack of radiators... I think I may have read they have the same drivers... maybe here in this thread, hehe... it's a survivor.

The 340's I'm having a hard time with. The high end is very nicely detailed, but a bit aggressive at times... home base is a set of K240's with velour pads, so it could just be a very different type of headphone than I'm used to.

Call me crazy, but I feel like I can hear the location of 2 distinct soundstages! Sometimes it's fun and interesting, and at other times kind of chaotic. I may be fooling myself just because I know what's going on in there... but it seems pretty real to me.

I was expecting sextett bottom, but nope, not really. The character is there, but it's a lot more distant. I've tried a number of pads, but I generally don't like aftermarket pads on AKG, for some reason.... I also tried a few sets of k240 pads, including new ones... didn't do much. I feel like DT770 pads might do good things here, but the smoother ridge of the cup won't hold them... I haven't tried velours on them yet... I'm nervous to swap any out I have now and stretch them, but I have a set on the way that may find their way there.

Here's one of the few links to K240R's I can find... terrified to try this shop! I suspect they are altered M220's, but even as fakes, they'd be fun to add.

And here are a couple I didn't include earlier... notice the K241 looks a lot like an EP monitor or DF... I haven't spent a lot of time with them yet.

Hey man, great video on these! It inspired me to go for the 3 of them as well. I'm starting to wonder, though, if there was a forth... I have a set of MPs with tighter soundstage, seemingly faster drivers, a little less of that sextett magic syrop... sounding more the LP, but with red baffle backs and almost white radiators... lighter colour than my other MP's, but still not snow white like the LPs.

I dunno, '70s DJs?

Funny you should say that, same here. That is the pair I thought were LPs because I really couldn't see the orange ring on the radiators, but they were off-white. Once the backs were off, orange baffles. And they sound a little faster, treble shifted from the 2 other MPs I have (which are nearly identical in sound). I was just testing this tonight, back and forth and across between the three.

By tighter soundstage, do you mean smaller or better seperation? Because these seem to have more distinct seperation, with good size, and less... Ya, syrup magic, gooiness( really good gooey, like a brownie, that you can fall into).

Seems I remember somewhere in this thread someone (can't remember who) speaking of a "magic" pair of MPs. So there you go, EP, MP, MMP (Magic Mid Production), and LP. Now that there is (unconfirmed) 4 models, I still need 2 more...?

Here it is.

Quote:

OK, I now have another LP pair, and what I wrote above still holds. One "magic" MP pair that has more substantial bass and balance, while all the others (an EP, another MP, and 2 LP) all sound very similar, very good, but not as good to me as the magic pair. (All of these now have new pads btw.)

But now I have a theory.

wink.gif

The magic pair I have seems to have a naturally higher clamping force than all the others. Kind of like in a resting state off your head, if you try to pull the two earcups apart where they meet, all of the others are much easier to pull apart. The magic pair requires some force to do that (I'd estimate it as 3x the amount of force). I also have a fairly new K240 Mk II, and the force for those is in between (not 2x, but maybe 1.75x, closer to all the other Sextetts than to the magic MP pair). They are completely different anyway, but those are close to brand new.

Now, if I take any other Sextett pair, and apply more pressure while I'm wearing them, bam, more low end oomph.

But when I look really close at the magic pair, I can't see anywhere that the headband has been bent (re-bent?) to apply more force. Manufacturing variation? Maybe these ones were just used a lot less over the years so they retain their shape better? But really, *all* the other pair are very similar in their clamping force, just that the magic pair applies a fair amount more force.

Brrrrrrr.. i still could not test my k240 (mp with new pads and cable with xlr)
.. my fixed tube amp came dead on arrival from shipping some time ago and in two weeks i will pick it up myself when its fixed² and hope i can try and compare them with my k340 ..those are still my most favorite sounding headphones especially the one with real nice bass and some chinese leather pads.

Well i can totally understand that love for 70-80s AKGs now!
They really built some magic stuff in austria

Just a note: if you end up modding these w/MMCX connectors (like I did) make SURE to put a touch of Gorilla Glue or something in there so they don't turn when you remove/connect cables.

Time to re-solder. Again.

So, I decided to refoam my ep's tonight and look at them closer, and noticed something... the grill on the ep is also on a mp, then there are other mp's with the latter grill, found on the lp's... to further confuse things, the ep and eMp(?) share a 4 wire cable, and one of the newer grilled mp's has a 4 wire as well...but another near identicle new grill mp has the vaccum style cord, like the lp. The old grill mp has darker radiators then the other mps, but not nearly as dark as the EP which also has a unique grill on the driver face made of metal with bigger circles, rather than mesh or plastic... it looks like the grill from the k140 drivers.

...that may be the nerdiest thing I've ever said.

Sounds like they're using whatever on their table lol
I have 2 pairs of LP and a pair of EP, the EP is like super V-shape with some tasteful and bouncy bass
and then the LPs have significantly more body in the mids and subdued treble. Great vocal cans.
And then I thought the sound diff might be the result of them switching to baffles of diff acoustic properties but looks like there've made some drastic change on the driver design as well.
