Hey guys,

I am looking at purchasing the AKG K240 headphones. In my research I found two models, the K240 and the K240 MK II. There is a considerable price difference between the two, but I have not read anything about a difference in sound quality. Would it be worth it to spend the extra cash on the MK II's?

Thanks!

If you have a strong amp for them, it's actually worth getting one of the older ones:

AKG K240 Sextett
AKG K240 DF
AKG K240M

They are better respected, and can often be found used for quite cheap.

Most likely.

Stay far, FAR away from the vintage K240s if you want to use them directly out of a portable player.

I would think that the MKII are the only ones currently for sale... really, as long as you go with the Studio ones, you should be getting easier-to-drive ones that will probably sound similar.

joelpearce,
the list should be even longer.

(600ohm) K240 Sextett cardan (Early / Mid / Mid_with_new_driver / Late production)
(600ohm) K241 (== K240 for French market)
(600ohm) K240 Monitor
(600ohm) K240 DF (dif. field) Studio Monitor
(55ohm) K240 Studio
(55ohm) K240 MKII (professional use)
(55ohm) K242 HD (the MKII's without mini-XLR and in different color, consumer use)

I have K240 Sextett MP plugged directly to my laptop. It's loud enough but of course the sound isn't what I'd like it to be.
If I'd wanted 55ohm version, it would be a tough decision. K240 Studio (with mini-XLR) can be found cheap, but with MKII version You get 2 sets of earpads (pleather + velour) and 2 cables. You have to decide what is better yourself.

The question is if they change or improve the sound/drivers from the 240@55ohm to the MKll, or even to the 242HD.

well they were using practically the same driver for over 20 years in K14X and K24X series. the 55 ohm driver was introduced in 2002, so it is much too early for a new one :D

I think the K240 Studio is exactly the same as the Mk II, except for some extra goodies included with the Mk II's.  See the 1st review here:

They guy mentions different pads, but there is only one part number for the pleather pads from AKG.  Maybe he was comparing brand new pads vs old.  When the old pads get squishier, the bass does decrease.

It's the K242 for the French market.  Sextett.  I have a pair.

I have almost all of these right now, and for someone who doesn't want to mess around buying old headphones and the crapshoot that can be (I have 2 K240 MP Sexetts that sound more different than the LP and EP's I have), I think the K240 Studio/Mk II is quite a nice headphone.  I like it more than all of the K501, K601, and K701 too.

But my absolute favorite is the oddball MP Sextett I have.
