Deciding to go up in the AH-D5000 seem like a good way to go. Also considering DT990.

I'm a bit scared after trying the hd518 to go with the sennheisers 598, 558 or the 600, 650 I like punch to the sound 'impact'.

the AKG 702's are a bit lean on bass apparently...Any other recommendations?

I like that the D5000 has good extension on both ends. And at least according to the graphs at headroom their isn't a dip in the midrange like the D2000. I know people say the drivers in the d2000 and d5000 are the same to justify cheaper option but I'm not convinced due to the graphs...I'm a little scared of midrange dip also after the hd518. What do you think of eqing the midrange up if required on the AH-d5000 (tho headroom graph looks fine)? Some might say the mids are a bit recessed only because of prominant bass and peak in upper frequencies. On the golden ears website the D2000 are recessed hoping D5000 isnt same.

I'm also wondering whether to buy from amazon, or buy a refurbished unit (denon direct) even cheaper?

Thanks.

You'll want to read this thread, although I'm not sure about who ships to your location:

thanks, had a read. I think amazon ships to my location. Amazon is authorised seller for denon (assuming it says ships from and sold by amazon.com) so should be safe not to get a fake.

Heya,

Yeap, get a refurb off Amazon. Usually around ~400 USD or so. Well worth it. It has amazing extension, crazy good impact, and a wonderful sound stage with it's classy wood look and sweet sheathed cable. The mids are not recessed, forget charts, even the chart looks right though, but forget it anyways, vocals sound great in the D5K as do instruments. You won't be left wanting for much of anything with it.

Very best,

I just purchased the D5000's :)

now to think how the markl mods will affect the frequency response :p I think will atleast try the pad mod. And if the bass shakes the headphones like Ive heard said might just eq the bass out abit, might remove need for the extra markl mods.
