I'd be disappointed if they weren't at least influenced... One of the promotional shots with the giant head part of the mecha reminded me of quite a few shots in Eva. Head of giant robot thing and the people on the extended platform shot originated with Eva right?

Not sure. I don't watch that much mecha, but when that image came out, everyone was like "omg its Eva!" without mention of any other anime.
