    Pioneer's First Hi-End Headphones: SE-Master 1

My pair has arrived this week, serial number 866. I'm listening to them with the balanced cable out of a Beta 22, Questyle CMA600i and Liquid Carbon X. They sound pretty effortless so far with a pronounced bottom end and great extension on both ends. I've also got a pair of SE Monitor 5 and the...

Rank the Headphones that You Own.

They are incredibly similar. It's fascinating that there are so many improvements with what looks like an identical driver. The DT 1990 is now top of my 'must try' list as leakage/isolation isn't a factor.

If you don't mind me asking, how is the DT 1990 better than 1770? Thanks.

    The Entry Level Stax Thread

It's not quantity, rather how tactile and present it is. I feel like I'm the odd one out, but even the bass-light AKG 240 Monitors with an early roll off seem to have a slightly more engaging low end. My ears must be tricking me. I agree that the 2170 system is unbeatable for the price.     ...

    The Entry Level Stax Thread

I've got the SRM-252S as I bought the SRS-2170 system. For being Stax's lowest-end model, they reproduce sound more euphonic and realistic than any TOTL dynamic or magnetic planar headphones that I've listened to. Considering the price of the competition, they're phenomenal for acoustic and...

    The Entry Level Stax Thread

Listening to the A&M SP-4588 vinyl of Joan Armatrading's 1976 self-titled album on the SR-207s is breathtaking. For me personally, primarily acoustic singer-songwriter albums are a perfect fit for this headphone, providing a more euphonic experience than my bookshelf speakers or studio monitors...

Need help finding good over-ear headphones that are portable and can be used when walking around

I'm really enjoying the ATH MSR-7s with their detachable cable. The clarity is great for the price.

    Electrostatic Choices

Stax have recently released the SR-L700 lambda which includes diaphragm technology from the SR-009. Comparisons between the SR-009 and SR-L700 so far have been positive considering that the latter is less than one third the price of Stax's flagship. They also don't require an expensive amplifier...

    The Entry Level Stax Thread

Another potential reason might be a trade-off in the design to achieve a warmer sound signature with a punchier bass at the cost of transient speed.   Quote: I can't remember which Stax model the Ether was being compared against, I don't think it was the SR-009, but he called the...

    The Entry Level Stax Thread

It might be that a fast transient response plus some unnatural characteristic in the headphone's reproduction of the sound, e.g. grain, resonance or an unrealistic soundstage, could result in a more analytical experience than hearing the original performance.

i want a headphone that has stax clarity with hd650 body and warmth

Great advice. It might also be worth trying to add a bass port, the easiest approach is called the 'straw mod', for more bottom-end if they're similar to the SR-207. I found this image of the mod online     Ignore the non-standard pads. I only had to pull the corner of the pad off (it's...

I need to try the HPH-MT220 since I love fun-sounding headphones :) I've heard great things about the TH-X00 and am fond of the aesthetics, but importing them into the UK is cost-prohibitive.

i want a headphone that has stax clarity with hd650 body and warmth

Stax's clarity is in another league. For a trade-off between warmth and clarity I would audition the Stax SR-L700, Audeze LCD-2/3/X/XC, Oppo PM-1/2/3, Focal Elear and Sennheiser HD700.

    The Entry Level Stax Thread

Thanks for suggesting the straw mod - I now enjoy the bass without an EQ. It seems that the mod emphasises mid-bass most, typical of dynamic headphones, so I experimented with the port size for a pleasant hump which didn't compromise linearity too much. I'm not a critical listener by Head-fi...
