    Sony MDR-Z7M2 Headphone Thread

Z7M2 does not require a lot of power. You can run them off of literally anything with a headphone jack. Both of your devices will drive them to literally deafening volumes. I have used mine with my laptop, NW-A45, WM1A, Fiio BTR3 and Schitt Fulla. There is no difference in sound with increased...

    Sony Z1R....listening impressions only

I don't hear the peak, and I have very good hearing. I think this may vary by personal anatomy. Otherwise I agree with this evaluation.

I have the Aron Closed X, and they are very good, but the Z1R is better in basically every way. I would be surprised if you disliked them. Congrats!

    Sony Z1R....listening impressions only

I have seen claims online that Sony quietly changed the Z1R in response to Tyll Herstens' early "10K Peak" review. Does anyone have an actual source on this? I have never heard such a peak, myself. My serial number is in the 101XX range.

Biased in that they sell the headphones compared?

Inflation seems to have hit Drop, and $429 is the sale price these days.

    Sony Z1R....listening impressions only

The famed 10k peak is horse$#@!. I've never heard it in any recording, any genre. no matter the source or the cable. My Z1R is in the 10100 serial number range.

    Sony Z1R....listening impressions only

https://www.head-fi.org/threads/sony-nw-wm1z-wm1a.815841/post-15858926 This is an extensive guide on fakes. Personally, I think they do nothing at all to the sound of the headphone. The stock cable sounds identical. In my opinion someone's money is better spent elsewhere, such as on music.

This is my current EQ for the Z1R. I use it for all songs, all genres - just to brighten things up a tad and thin out any midbass bleed. I love it, and when I got to "direct" I notice the difference immediately.

    Sony Z1R....listening impressions only

Z7M2 is the obvious choice, it's definitely a "baby Z1R." If you're looking for a backup Z1R, there's really no other choice. With that said, the other closed backs in this price range are the Aeon Closed X (which I own and think is wonderful), the Focal Elegia, the two Hifiman models (R10 and...

    Sony Z1R....listening impressions only

I was actually just coming to amend my review upward - more listening without comparison to other cans reveals the Z7M2 to be pretty kickass across multiple genres (today I was listening to Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson, Dvorak orchestral works, and some jazz). It's a really good headphone...

    Sony Z1R....listening impressions only

I have a pair. They're fine, but for me it takes away some of the special bassy character that the Z1R has with stock or Dekoni leathers. I prefer to just EQ a light boost in the 1-4khz region, and to thin out the midbass just a wee bit around 250hz. No matter how you slice it though, one of...

ZX300 is a beautiful DAP. Loved it (but upgraded to WM1A). Still kind of miss it :)

@Shane D, They're really good. I listened to the track "The Map Room: Dawn" on the John Williams Raiders of the Lost Ark score. The Z7M2 nailed it from top to bottom. There are times and tracks in which the Z7M2 gets really close to the Z1R. But the Z1R is definitely just a bit better across the...

Review by 'MatthewWeflen' on item 'Sony MDR-Z7M2'

With this review I would like to settle the long standing question of how the MDR-Z1R and MDR-Z7M2 compare. Reviews are all over the map on the Z7M2 and how it compares to its older sibling. I am reviewing them against each other using the Sony WM1A Walkman set to direct output (no EQ/DSP), and...

    Sony Z1R....listening impressions only

I agree, having used the Z1R for two years now, I would not want to go back to the Z7M1 or M2 for my "serious listening." I think the Aeon Closed X is a better headphone than the Z7M2 because of its detail level in mid/treble, even though the Z7M2 has better bass punch/slam. But the Z1R is...

    Sony Z1R....listening impressions only

Quick impressions of Z7M2 - they offer perhaps 75% of the performance at a third of the price of the Z1R. The soundstage is a tad smaller, and there is less energy in the treble and detail in the bass. But it is not bass light, the vocals aren't scooped (as alleged by Zeos), and it really is a...

    Sony Z1R....listening impressions only

I've just sort of missed the Z7 since I sold it in favor of the Z1R. I was looking at those used as well, but none met my condition preferences. So I figured I would try something new and see how the models compare. As far as use case, I want a backup for the Z1R, really, just in case anything...

If appearance on the head is a big issue, Z7M2 wins there. It's significantly smaller. I know that just from my experience with the Mark 1. But I'll be comparing a bit more than that. ;-)

And I can report that the Geekria cover does fit snugly and does no impact comfort. I also still fits in the Z1R box, which is key to me.
