Next purchase: New Heaphones or New Amp

Also if you're going for a Woo Audio amp and the HD650s, you're going to want to go for the WA3, its a better match for the high impedance of the HD650s.   I went from HD595s as my first decent headphones to HD650s, GREAT value upgrade even when I was just using an AV receiver as the amp.

$350 to spend. Ultrasone Pro 900 or Sennheiser HD650?

I've tried them off an iPhone 3GS and they sound very ordinary, the HD595s were great off the iPhone, and put them to shame, but run them off a moderately priced second hand AV receiver with a decent headphone output stage, and they're rather excellent.  So while you don't need an expensive amp...

Quote: Frankly even at $350 they're not a good deal, an Orient new, or a TAG used, even a vintage Omega can be had for that.  Amazon's $1200 off caper is just a complete load =\

The 2500B also turned out to have issues, so the 2500C was released, which lowered the beat rate from 28,800 to 25,200 BPH.  These were almost perfected but then in the last few months a final 2500D was released.  The Cal 8500 should likely replace nearly all 2500 series movements soon anyway...

    Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

I used a Denon AVR-1601 which is worth about $50 used these days, and it performed quite well.  Vintage and/or just generally good AV receivers can run HD650s well, some don't, like my other two Yamaha modern receivers.

    Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

Its a late 1990's Denon avr-1601, but I'm not sure how it would rate, did a quick search and found:     http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/9414/denon-avr-1601-headphone-jack     http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/148252/dedicated-headphone-amp-vs-ht-receiver-amp   Not sure...

    Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

Just got my HD650's today (used few years old), running FLAC tracks through a Xonar D2X -> 12 year old Denon AV receiver -> HD650   Staggering improvement over the HD595s, just night and day.  So much more comfortable, so much more bass and lower mid range.  I was expecting the Denon AV...

Old Tube Stockpile - Advice On Usefulness

The 12AU7s 12AX7s are only a handful Mullards, but predominantly AWV (Amalgamated Wireless Valve) which seams from wikipedia to be an alliance between RCA and AWA that produced valves here in Australia, not sure if that makes them the same as RCA, or if they'd be different as they do have "made...

    Sennheiser HD598, are they?

I hope they've improved the durability of them over the 595s, the ear pads were comfortable but had to be replaced every two years of use.

Need some wireless router advice and recommendations

I'm on about my 6th Netgear with terrible results, at work our Belkin is having problems, and I've got a dead D-Link as well.  Not really sure where you'd go to find a good one anymore, they're probably all coming out of the same factories anyway.

Old Tube Stockpile - Advice On Usefulness

Hi, I've been reading into getting a tube amplifier for a pair of HD650s I've ordered and had almost settled on a Woo Audio 3, but I've been reading up on tube options, as inevitably everyone seams to start buying more and more as they get deeper into it.  Rather than ordering online I asked...

Have a few others, but my favorite at the moment is a vintage 1979 Rolex Submariner with original faded "ghost" bezel, other watches just sit in the box.

    Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

Hi, just ordered my set of HD650s after many years of faithful service from my now retiring HD595s, I'm looking at ordering a WooAudio WA3 to replace the 1990s Denon AV receiver I currently use to power the HD595s, but I run analog currently from a Xonar D2X to the Denon, as the DACs in it are...

    Magnat/Denon Trash or Treasure?

I've inherited a home theatre setup that's been sitting in mothballs for a few years now, still very good condition though. It's a 5.1 setup consisting of the following: Denon AV reciever (Denon AVR-1601) 2X front speakers (Magnat Vintage 320) 2X rear speakers (Magnat Vector 11) 1X...

    Sennheiser 595s vs. X

Haven't posted in ages after having some guidance here when in a similar situation to you with little knowledge of high end headphones but a desire to purchase something that's long use comfortable, good for gaming, good for music (I'm not a bass heavy person), good for movies, durable and easy...

    HD595 vs Bookshelves

Having both the HD595s and a set of Logitech Z680s for 5.1, the 5.1 setup is almost completely useless for gaming. Speakers will always have you at a disadvantage to headphones, particularly in things like first person shooters where accurate, sensitive, directional sound really matters. One...

What music sounds best with HD595s?

Placebo, Splashdown, Massive Attack, Portishead, Moby, A Perfect Circle all sounded alot better than my other favourites, System of a Down, Black Sabbath, Il Nino, and every other metal / drum and bass track. The best song I've found so far that really shows off the HD595's strengths is...

    Sennheiser HD595 Impressions Thread

About a week into owning them, the HD595s have definitely settled more, and the bass is a bit more responsive, as at the start I was using a lot of bass boost to compensate, and while that deepened and thickened the bass, it came at the cost of responsiveness. Now, a week later the...

    Getting my HD595s sounding right

I did actually try to sink the X-Fi but the problem is the die is so, so small in comparison to the older Audigy, and there are no mounting holes, so the only option is direct die thermal epoxy. To make things worse, the X-Fi uses a BGA package, which means even a light heatsink could very...

    Getting my HD595s sounding right

Crackling on one motherboard, then overheating on the other motherboard, as that one had the X-Fi sitting right in the "Jet-wash" of an extremely hot graphics card, so full lockups in games. I've heard good things about the LDM+/HD595 combo! I imagine it would sort of bridge the gap I have...

    Getting my HD595s sounding right

Could you suggest an amp that would work well? I'm still using this old AIWA set, as its the only one I have with a reasonable quality headphone out. Reasonable being better than terrible. Also, what is the proper way to connect the Audigy? The front speaker out is what I'm using, as I can't...

    Getting my HD595s sounding right

Just picked up a pair of HD595s today after months of using a pair of HD437s and a 2KG pair of Sharp quadaphonic monsters, and the difference has been nothing short of astounding but I'm yet to really work out the best way to have them set up. Currently I have a Sound-Blaster Audigy, which...
