Do headphones have the same issues as full range speaker drivers?

Do headphones have the same issues as full range speaker drivers? Full range driver have issues, to overcome issues(Doppler distortion, limited high and low range) speaker designers have split the frequency to dedicated drivers. When a driver is playing low frequencies and high frequencies at...

Are dacs so good now that even the cheaper ones are 98% as good as the uber expensive ones?

Just wondering with all the advancement in dac technology. I would guess something like the Schiit Modi, for example, is probably as good as $2k dacs of 5 - 7 years ago? I don’t have the latest and greatest dac, but would it be correct to assume something like a Modi or Bifrost is within 98%...

Is balance headphone amp still perferable?

Is balance headphone amp still preferable over single ended? I read this article regarding the myth of balance headphone amps(link below), seems factual and makes sense. Are their counter arguments to this article which says balance introduces more artifacts to the signal and SE amps is...

How worn out should NOS tubes look?

Just got new tubes from thetubestore. I'm not sure what to make of it. It's NOS, but should it look this worn out?

Are older model amps as good as newer models?

I have noticed that many amp designs have remained unchanged for 10 or so years with no tweaks or improvements, it seems frozen in time. Woo audio, Ray Samuels and Mapletree, for example have many older amp models. Now there are a lot of newer designs at the same or cheaper price like Schiit...

If amps of similar specs sound different, what is the point of reading it?

I used to read specs, but I found out, all “neutral” amps sound different. Amps that measure very very well, still sound different and amps with more power, does not necessary, have better control of headphones. So, yes, what is the point of specs? With headphones at least you can see bumps...

Any sonic benefits on amps greater than $250?

I’m considering buying the Asgard 2, base in its publish measurements(0.008% THD, 20Hz - 20Khz, -0.1db) it is probably as transparent as it gets.  Is there any sonic advantage of amps in the $500 to $1k range?  Is everything past $250 just slightly different colorations?

Why are flagship headphones so expensive now?

I remember the good old days when flagship headphones were around $500 (HD650 and Grado RS1).  A really good headphone amp would run you $400.  The best IEM the ER4S was I think around $300.    Now flagship headphones are 4X - 6x the price.    Have materials gone up in price?  Does the...

Will a ultra transparent $2k Dac make 320kbps MP3 sound better or worse?

I listen primarily through Spotify 320kbps bitrate.  Streamed through my Apple TV and via optical to my DAC.  I currently have a Bifrost Uber and quite happy with it.  I want to upgrade to a higher end DAC maybe a Hugo or Yggdrasil.  The question is, will the ultra transparent DAC make 320kb...

Been comparing my SE846 mids against RE600 and Focal Spirit Professional

So I recently got the SE846, two weeks ago with very high expections. Been comparing it against my RE600 and Focal spirit Professional headphones both neutral headphones/earphones. Source is the Mydac and O2 amp both neutral as well. I am finding that the SE846 lowmids is slightly off neutral...

Why do top end headphones go beyond 20 khz if there is no sound there?

The Sennheiser HD800, Grado PS1000e, Beyerdynamic T1, and Hifiman HE560 all play up to 50 khz. Why design headphones to reproduce frequency ranges beyond 20khz if there is nothing there?

Is it possible to wirelessly stream 24 bit audio from pc to DAC?

I currently have my Apple TV hooked up to my Bifrost via optical cable but it only streams 16 bit audio.  Are there devices which can wirelessly read 24 bit audio from my pc then digitally transmit it to a separate DAC?

Does the Beyer T70 really have light bass below 200 hz? The freq response chart is showing good bass response.

The freq response chart is showing the T70 have a relatively even bass response compared to the LCD-2 and HD650. Does the Beyer T70 really have light bass below 200 hz as many have commented on?  I'm debating between this and the Mad dog to replace my uncomfortable DT1350.

Will going from a DT1350 to a DT660 be an upgrade or downgrade in SQ?

My DT1350 sounds great but way too uncomfortable for 1hr + of usage.  I want to switch to a larger headphone with a similar neutral sound.  I use my headphone at my office so it must be a closed type.  I read reviews on the DT660 and it seems like a good one, unfortunately it is an older model...

What is the name of this switch?

Does anybody know what type of switch the above is called?  I cannot seem to find it in Mouser.  It is an audio flip switch, that is all I know, not enough info to find it in online.

Do switches color sound like potentiometers do?

From what I understand switches are on or off, so there should be no degradation in the signal.  Am I right on this one?  I want to get a switch for my B22 build, but don't want to get anything which adds are takes out from the signal.

Has Hifiman upgraded/downgraded the HE500 drivers?

Okay so I measured impedence on my HE500 drivers to see how close it is to spec.  The specs say it should be 38 ohms, however I am getting 52 ohms. This seems very close to the HE6 impedence of 50 ohms.  Has Hifiman change the latest revision of HE500's? Mine is way out of spec, bought it new...

Suspecting a buyer scam, should I point it out or claim insurance?

I recently sold a 9.5/10 condition Meier Concerto amp to a zero feedback, just registered, zero post buyer. The amp was shipped insured to his Paypal confirmed address and bubble wrap 3-4 layers with foam on the inside of the box for added padding.  He contacted me this morning and wants a...

Stereo or dual mono volume control?

I'm decided whether to implement stereo or dual mono volume control for my B22.  What do you guys think is the better way to go?  I read somewhere our left and right ear don't perceive volume the same, that is the reason I am considering dual mono, other than that, I'm not too sure which one is...

Can you tell if a HP/IEM cable has separate or shared ground wires?

Basically i want to reterminate my IEM cable to a balance plug, but don't know if it has shared or separate ground wires. Any way of finding that out without having to cut open the cable? I have a multimeter, can that be used somehow?

    Is Grado evolving too slowly?

I get the feeling they are being left behind especially in the high end products category.  They have not had an answer to the top end products from Sennheiser, Audeze, and Beyerdynamic.
