same here.  a little too warm/mid-centric, poor bass extension, and light but cheap feeling cabling.  at $100 its still a good buy if you want something thats really non-fatiguing and comfortable.   Quote:

Creative has dropped the price of the aurvana in ear 3 dual-BA earphones to around $100.  They were $150 last week and on sale for $130 before that.  Just ordered a pair from amazon so i should be able to check them out by friday.  Joker's review compares them favorably to the klipsch custom 3...

    Most uncomfy full size headphones?

as much as i hate to say it, i just couldn't get along with akg k240s.  they sounded awesome, but for me they just always pressed too hard around my ears and the pads were hot and irritating.  in retrospect i should have tried them with different pads.  oh well, i got a pair of k702s which are...

    Famous people with audiophile headphones/mics

not a great photo, but dave chappelle as MC Fisticuffs in "Turn my headphones UP." he must have had the 600 ohm version.

    AKG or Bose?

i would look at sony MDv6/mdr7506 and sennheiser hd280s.  those are two great closed back headphones.  The sennheisers have better bass, but the sonys are more comfortable and have a slightly more pleasing top end i find.

how do you deal with loud/compressed albums?

Quote:   I think the EQ and mixing was done really well on that album, its just that they smashed the album with so much compression in the mastering stage.  The dynamic range really suffers as a result and i think that's why the bass frequencies (which would have been physically louder...

    Audiophile quality hip-hop....

IMO there are two kinds of well-produced hip hop albums:     the albums that have great fidelity, clarity, detail, etc.   Jay-Z - Blueprint Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique Tupac - All eyes on Me The D.O.C. - No one can do it Better The Fugees and some of Kanye's albums (though i...

Favorite sites for discovering new music?

*raises hand sheepishly* - pitchfork.   i don't really put a lot of stock in their reviews though.  usually when i discover bands on pitchfork i look them up on allmusic and then sample some of their stuff.

    Unpopular/Uncommon Musical Opinions

the beatles were less than the sum of their parts (i.e. three excellent songwriters and an incredible producer) and benefited greatly from the cultural climate their effervescent marketability.  consequently, they are the "safest" band to ever like and everything beatles-related will continue to...

    good "headphone" albums?

Sigur Ros - Agaetis byrjun Fripp & Eno - Evening Star Joy Division - Closer Norah Jones - Come Away With Me   the last two really benefit from the close, personal sound of headphones - though for entirely different reasons.  I think the norah jones record sounds more intimate on...

JBL Control 2p.  love them for their portability, and they actually sound pretty good and detailed for their size as nearfields.

    Which Headphones for Monitoring/Mixing

if you're not tracking vocals or instruments there isn't really any compelling reason to go with closed-back phones, unless you prefer that sound signature (they tend to offer more solid bass than open-back).  the 7506s are probably the only closed back phones i'd feel comfortable tracking on...

    Which Headphones for Monitoring/Mixing

k240s are fine for mixing.  they are a standard around the industry, especially for the price range.  for monitoring they stink though since they do very little isolating.  for tracking you are much better off with a pair of closed back headphones - sony mdr7506 and sennheiser hd280 are by far...

Quote: i don't doubt that.  however, since much of my use is in the recording audio/reference monitoring sphere i HAVE to use cans that are easily driven by my audio interface/DAC.  it drives most headphones just fine, but i often have to crank it a bit too much to get my AKGs to come to...

cool, thanks.  i'm going to try to head to b&h or j&r in the next few days and check them out.  might even want to consider akg k242hd or k240mkii and swap the pads for larger velour pads? that would deal with the comfort and drivability concerns, but i'm guessing its not a big tradeup in terms...

hey all, new head-fier here.   i'm a musician/self-producer just starting to getting my feet wet with serious audio.  i'm looking to take a step up from the akg k240 (600 ohm) cans i've been rocking for the past 2+ years.  My main issues with them is that they are quite difficult to drive...
