Looking for a mid priced redbook player, to go with my GS-1!

I am downgrading a bit, and I have settled on the GS-1 as my only home amp. I love it, but the bass is a little thinner than my Slam was. I am thinking of getting the NAD C542 as a redbook source. Do you think this player will have good enough bass slam to match with my GS-1? Or can you...

    SA5000

Congrats on one of the best sets of cans, at any price point! Take your time with them, let them burn in generously, and experiment with different source/amp combos. When you get it just right, they are very hard to beat!!

The best closed rock can, bar none, is the CD3000!! If you can find one!

    Which tubes--Singlepower Slam & Grado?

The Sylvania 5687's are warm tubes. I find that for a warmer grado like the RS-1, I like using either the Tung Sol D-Getter, or the Ray Theon 5687's! For gain, I use the Hytron CBS 6sn7, or the Ken-Rad VT-231 (If I want a more fuller bass).

hd650 - does it need an amp?

Anything that drives the HD650's is an amp! getting the best out of them is another thing! I would definitely get the best amp you can for them, as they require good clean power to shine!

WOW! Taking the foams out of the HD650 makes a BIG difference!

    a900 vs dt990

No contest here! The DT990 wins out, with tighter more controlled bass, and just an overall better sound, IMHO!

    What to try next?

I would say to try a Sony SA5000! It is one of my favorite cans, and it blends in perfectly with my K701, and 325i!

    SA5000 vs. K701

That's the wrong question to ask me! I own both, and love the both of them to death! they both excel at different tasks, so it would be hard to pick one. The better all arounder would have to be the K701 though!

HELP!! PPX3-Slam plus K701 equals bass distortion!

Fantastic Update!! I just received the 6db attenuators, and they are a God send!! My K701's are now alive and kicking with no distortion to be found! Bass has also come alive very nicely. Now my Slam is putting out what its supposed to!

Letter to Volcano, Re: Tool - 10,000 Days, protest against sound butchering

I don't have any problems with the disc, it sounds fine to me! As a matter of fact, it sounds better than Aenima, which I consider to not be a very good recorded CD, not the music! I agree that the level of the CD could be toned down a bit, but like I read in a previous post, this album is not...
