    headphone amp & pre

I know this question has been asked before in other forms, but I'm still confused. I want to hook my AKG1000 amp to a minimax pre. On an integrated amp, I would turn volume all the way up and control volume with pre. Do I do the same thing with the headphone amp? I'm hoping to get a bit of...

    Need some CD player names...

I'll put in a plug for the Cary 303. Cary is coming out with the 303/200 which has the new Microsoft MicroPacific(?) 200 digital filter. You should be able to find a new older model for close to your $1500 price point. If you're interested I recommend contacting Kevin at upscaleaudio.com. He's a...

    Why No Remote Volume Control?

Well, if money isn't an object there is a quite startling solution. The Placette remote volume control. www.placetteaudio.com I'm not sure that there is a reason it wouldn't work between the source and a headphone amp. I've just started auditioning it. It costs $1000, has only one...

Musical Fidelity claims its new CD player is better than SACD!

I don't know about sounding better than SACD (I've never heard it) but I can say that after listening to the new Cary 306/200 I've heard the best 2-channel sound I have ever heard (detail, smoothness, quickness, depth, timbral precision). I even have had multi-channel illusions where the entire...

    Best CDP

I think for about that price you can get the Tjoeb Aha! which has gotten rave reviews at Audioreview and audioasylum. You can get it from Kevin at upscale audio. I just bought my Cary cdp from him and he was a pleasure to work with.

Are you amped right into the source?

I have a dumb question. Do you connect your headphone amp directly to the source or do you connect the source to preamp and the headphone amp to the preamp? If you connect headphone amp directly to source do you find yourself constantly switching interconnects depending on whether you want...

AKG/SAC K1000: Initial Listening Notes (LONG)

I meant to respond earlier to Squirt's post stating his preference for the Cambridge Audio integrated over the AKG. I suspected that some of edginess I heard was attributable to the AKG amp. I recently have been busy auditioning the Cary 303 cdp so have not offered any new impressions of the...

New Headroom (& other) amps Reviewed - No foolin'!

Thank you so much for the excellent review. You have done us all a public service. I'm envious of your opportunity hear all these amps side by side. On the other hand, you must be rung through after all that intensive auditioning (I hope there were medicinals available to help you return to the...

AKG/SAC K1000: Initial Listening Notes (LONG)

I auditioned this combo, comparing it to Headroom Cosmic (old model without Base Station 1) and Sennheiser HD600 (no Clou cable). The SAC amp had about 60 hours of burn-in time. Headphone only about 15 hours. First, an apologia. I'm a novice at explaining what I hear. I know next to nothing...

    What portable AMP to Buy?

You might also want to get one of Headroom's old Cosmic portables. They still might have a few and they're selling for $400 which is a great price. I bought the Cosmic and am quite happy with it. I haven't hear any other headphone amp so I don't have any comparisons.

AKG K1000 and THE WAVE AV-8

Quote: Originally posted by templeboy First, you need to add volume control to amps. Second, at it's full output w/ 3% distortion, you can only crank K1000 to a little over 70dB. I rest my case. Jan has K1000 and special matching amp on sale for $850 (?). This is the way to go if you...

    Pro audio power conditioners?

Has anyone here tried any pro audio power conditioners (e.g. ETA Furman, Tripp Lite, SurgeX) in their consumer audio set ups? Most seem to have EMI/RFI filtering. What are some of the features that I should be looking for in power conditioners/surge protectors. Thanks
