Oppo PM-1: A New Planar Magnetic Headphone!

Because they shouldn't. A little more than the Fostexes if they are built with better-looking materials, perhaps, but price talk here is pretty insane. Seriously, anyone who things that a little piece of mylar with magnets on both sides should cost as much as an NRTL-safety approved disk...

    KEF M500/M200 Impressions Thread

Yes. I've been saying so since I picked up my first pair. (Of two - I did the exchange because. I never got to hear them side-by-side but the FR is definitely tilted to the bass.   I'm not the only one who thinks so: http://www.whathifi.com/review/m200     No, an amp won't change...

    KEF M500/M200 Impressions Thread

Quote:   The relevant frequencies are the same regardless of the reproduction device. Furthermore, just as a matter of physics an 8mm driver in a 2cc "room" (i.e. the upper end of the volume of a human ear canal) will produce a whole lot more deep bass than a little 15" woofer in a 4000...

    KEF M500/M200 Impressions Thread

Quote:   You're hearing harmonic overtones, not the fundamental. The KEF M200's are actually a good example of this, because their bass distortion is quite low. You can't really hear anything when playing a 20 or 25Hz tone, which I consider impressively low distortion. A 40Hz tone can be...

    KEF M500/M200 Impressions Thread

Quote:   Hmm. My experience is opposite. Compared to ADDIEMs, ViSang R-02s, or Altec im716's (rebadged Ety ER-4's with a S/P switch) with the cord wrapped around my ear, the M200's are quite microphonic. I wish KEF had fed the wire through the tail of the eighth note.    Quote:  ...

The AKG K550 Impressions and Discussion Thread!

Quote: All I have to say is, get Audyssey amp for your iPhone (or lesser platform, if it is available for them) and try it. Turn on their K550 curve, listen...music. They sound a lot like Senn HD-580 or Mad Dogs. Turn it off...SHRIEKING HIGHS.   I don't know your the DT990, but it's...

The AKG K550 Impressions and Discussion Thread!

Quote: Not sure what Dynamex is, but what's useful for the cavity resonance (a very minor issue) is some sort of loose damping material, such as the stuff in batts used for home insulation. Sticking car door deadener type materials on surfaces randomly isn't going to do anything meaningful...

    KEF M500/M200 Impressions Thread

Quote:   I think you misunderstood my comment. Though I'm not sure, as your response isn't terribly comprehensible.   What I wrote was that the FR is tilted too much in favor of the upper bass, i.e. downwards-sloping, for my taste. I made no comment on the subbass.   A song that...

    KEF M500/M200 Impressions Thread

Quote: The M200's isolate very well. Better than most single-flange rubber eartips, IMO.   Am I the only one who thinks the M200 are entirely too weighted to the upper bass, though? I've compared them not just to my other IEMs (ADDIEM, Vi-Sang R-02, Ety ER-4), but also my full-sized...

The AKG K550 Impressions and Discussion Thread!

Quote:   If you want to act like a voodoo electrican and practice your wire worship freely, whatever. Enjoy But understand that people who actually understand the physics behind sound reproduction know that futzing with mere wires is just a faith-based, scientifically illiterate placebo. ...

    KEF new headphones!

Anyone else tried the M200s IEM's? I recently picked up a pair. They look/feel like high quality little things, and (as an long time KSC 35 user) I like the ear clips. But I'm thinking a return is likely. They're just really tilted towards the bass. For reference, the other cans and IEMs I have...

The AKG K550 Impressions and Discussion Thread!

No, the stock wire is not the weakest link on these headphones by any stretch, certain people's inclination to act as demented electricians and replace every wire they see with something more expensive notwithstanding. Everything you think your magic wire did (and that the stock wire didn't)...

"Mad Dog" by MrSpeakers, modified Fostex T50RP review

Quote:   Is there an iOS app that incorporates Dolby Headphone? I'd like to try it.   Actually, I think my Anthem AVR might have it. I'll have to check.

"Mad Dog" by MrSpeakers, modified Fostex T50RP review

Quote:   I have MD's (though my Alpha Pads seem to be somewhere in the USPS's intestines, so they have Dog Pads right now; Dan's going above and beyond, though) as well as D2000s, HD580s, and AKG K550s. Amp-wise, I've tried all four on my ca. 1999 HeadRoom Total AirHead, a 2006 HeadRoom...

Why are you people so obsessed with mere wires? These things have much more pressing problems than their wiring.

    Need Replacement for Sennheiser Momentum

Quote: That's not really true. The 580s and 600s used the same drivers, though when the 600 came out they advertised tolerances as being tighter. The difference was that the 580J/600 uses different materials for the grills, cups, and headbands.    I found them to sound substantially the...

"Mad Dog" by MrSpeakers, modified Fostex T50RP review

Quote:   There are lots of 3.5mm-3.5mm cables out there. A fair number with one right angle plug (straight plugs look funny sticking out of the cup, because the plug is on the side of the cup) as well.   A while ago I bought this one for my T50rp (stock) because I didn't like the...

    AKG K550 cup mods thread

So far, I have to say that the biggest improvement I've found in the K550s was...installing the Audyssey amp app on my iPhone. It doesn't do much for my Senn 580s or ADDIEMs, but their target curve fixes most of the things that ail the K550 up top.

    AKG K550 cup mods thread

Not sure stuffing the main enclosure did anything.   Stuffing behind the pole vent did seem to make the treble less splatty-sounding.

The AKG K550 Impressions and Discussion Thread!

Has anyone else tried any mods besides pad mods? (I stuffed the bottom of my pads with foam weatherstripping, because I wasn't getting a good seal. After doing so, there's bass!   I think (can't be sure, as I don't have an unfilled pair to do a direct A/B comparison) I tamed the treble...

What do you think the new Sennheiser flagship will be?

Quote:   People like then because they're beautiful, and people are very suggestible. And I'd bet most people raving about them haven't actually, you know, heard them.   I presume from your blather that you haven't actually done the comparison. Or, perhaps, all of those other "best of...

What do you think the new Sennheiser flagship will be?

Quote:   The Orpheus, while gorgeous (especially that amp), is a thin, reedy-sounding piece of kit. The contemporary 580 was a better-sounding headphone. That's what.   I've listened to them back-to-back. Have you?   Of course, people who base things on price-tags and looks rather...

    Best Headphones for SCIENCE

Quote:   Have you checked out Dr. Olive's recent AES paper, "The Relationship between Perception and Measurement of Headphone Sound Quality"? http://www.aes.org/e-lib/browse.cfm?elib=16486   While expensive, it seems the Audeze LCD-2 would be a good choice. I don't have any personal...

What do you think the new Sennheiser flagship will be?

Quote:   Best-looking, probably. Best sounding, not by a long shot. In an A/B comparison, a comparatively humble HD580 driven by a comparatively ugly HeadRoom Total AirHead Mk. 1.5, sounded far better than the Orpheus. The Orpheus was just thin as a reed.
