Cal Poly Mini-Meet
There are two Cal Poly's. One is in San Luis and the other is in Pamona. We are talking about the San Luis one. Just to be extra clear.- VioletConqueror

Thunderpants!
Wow, thats really cool to see the whole damping scheme used for this high-end orthos. I noticed that the hifiman had a very dense looking sheet and then lots of cottony material. It seemed kind of like a compromise with damping the open orthos without loosing the openness. IIRC the openpants...- VioletConqueror

Cal Poly Mini-Meet
I'll be home the weekend of the 20th (thats the weekend after next). Just throwing that out there. Only new thing I have is the e7/9 which could be fun to compare. Maybe I'll order some fostex t50rp's... damn you head-fi my wallet is pissed off right now.- VioletConqueror

Cal Poly Mini-Meet
Well I haven't heard any of the stuff you mentioned but I will say that my e7+e9 sounds really impressive. Going on memory alone I would say I like it better than that ibasso I heard at the meet (was that your's vengence?). Super good deal and if you don't like the dac in the e7 the e9 is an...- VioletConqueror

Review: Fiio E7
I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the firmware can't be upgraded without special equipment. Feiao what kind of chip are you using for your rom and microcontroller (computer engineering nerd here)? I doubt the code would be hard to change to make the screen turn of but getting that change...- VioletConqueror

Thunderpants!
Wow just finished reading this epic thread. I won't commit to too much but the gears are turning in my head and ideas are leaking so there may be some fun new TP's in the world whenever I get a chance to actually try out what I'm thinking. I have an old broken pair of Audio-technica A-5's that I...- VioletConqueror

Review: Fiio E7
For me I broke my head-phone jack a little bit so that might be the source of the noise/quality issues but I remember seeing some other people posting about it to. Mine is also maybe 3 or 4 years old so maybe they fixed some of their issues. I'm super pleased with my setup, sometimes I catch...- VioletConqueror

Review: Fiio E7
e7/e9 showed up today. Super happy with it, I still can't get over how much better it sounds than my crappy little turtle beach. It's like having whole new headphones. Base is more present and cleaner, much better separation and the mids have come forward slightly which is sorely needed on...- VioletConqueror

Bit depth
Quote: I think "good enough" is when the noise level is quieter than your heartbeat or the blood rushing through your ears. If you need a custom sound proof room (the type that make your ears ring with the silence and let you hear your own blood) in order to hear your blood masking the...- VioletConqueror

Bit depth
Quote: The difference is in the exponential growth of binary numbers and in the fact that 16-bit is near perfect while 8-bit is not. 16-bit allows a very large dynamic range with a step size so small that we can't hear it. 8-bit is so much smaller (remember its 2^8 times smaller, not...- VioletConqueror

Bit depth
^^ Does that mean you record with far more bits than you could possibly need and then normalize down to make it fit in whatever bit-depth you need? I wish I enough time to take some DSP classes (I'm a Computer Engineering student right now) but I really don't have enough time. This stuff is...- VioletConqueror

Bit depth
Think about it this way, you have numbers between 0 and 65536 and you assign a volume to each one and for simplicity they have to be evenly spaced. We could say that for every step up the volume increases by a big ammount (say the equivalent of fingers snapping) and then we would be able to...- VioletConqueror

Review: Fiio E7
Quote: I was curious about this. There seems to be a consensus that the e7 is a bit warm. I have a700's which tend to be a bit warm on their own, and I was worried about some bad synergy there. This didn't seem to bother the op though. I was thinking the E9 would solve that problem...- VioletConqueror

Cal Poly Mini-Meet
haha, yea i'm looking at DACs and amps. Can't get that ibasso out of my head. Still debating if I need a portable amp or not, or if I should just get a uDAC or something and just deal with the crappy Ipod sound. -
Cal Poly Mini-Meet
Too bad about spacewolf. The big revelation for me was listening to other DAC/AMP combo's. I obviously need to invest in a decent dac/amp before getting any new headphones. My current setup certainly doesn't do my a700's justice. I knew a good source was important, but I really didn't expect... -

Headphones - WORN!!! - new thread - no nudity
^ looks like an interesting study on neurology. I just read about a study using subcranial implants to get a mouse to move and click by thinking about phenomes. Pretty cool, not too long before direct interfaces and headphones become obsolete *hides in flame proof bunker*. Oh, and I cast my...- VioletConqueror

Cal Poly Mini-Meet
I just got back to Santa Cruz yesterday, but I'm considering coming home again just for this, we'll see. Any of you have stock a700's I modded mine it'd be fun to compare them side by side. -
A900 blu-tak mod pics
So I decided to take this afternoon to mod my a700's. Unfortunately Tyson's original pictures have disappeared and darkswordsman17's pictures could use some expansion (no offense, I used mostly your ideas to mod my own). I listen to all kinds of music, unfortunately with this mod...- VioletConqueror

Why do so many great albums sound so bad?
Thought I'd just throw another group who's recording quality does not do the band justice. Blind Guardian. I really can't figure this one out. Listening straight off the CD (mp3 might be a little worse but I haven't ABXed it) it just sounds veiled. Everything seems muted, like the upper-mids are...- VioletConqueror

Being a student audiophile...
I have finals from 10am-10pm on Thursday and internship interviews sporadically until then (and maybe after). Meh, I got some old broken ATH-5's off ebay a while ago so I can look forward to trying to fix those over spring break, and make make a HP stand. Always need something to look forward to...- VioletConqueror
