Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

Speaking of software demos by vendors took me back a decade or so when I was part of the team evaluating potential new knowledge and information management systems. (Yes I know, not exciting but essential for a $100B company). In order to do this we had to expand our team and had a new hire for...

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

No...not yet. Best intentions but you know....Road to perdition etc. Assembled all the parts 2 or 3 weeks ago but life intervened and I'm currently on the road [in Adelaide] as my wife's roadie. And here I am thinking I had taken early retirement. :) Back home next week and will roll up my...

DOH...Quite right. I didn't recognize the URL straight off (It was changed some time ago) and it didn't give Rod by name. :) Yep, JLH. Dyslexia rules! KO!

Also http://www.firstwatt.com/articles.html which lists many of Nelsons designs, including the infamous 'Beast with a thousand JFETS'! The bonus is that his writing always makes me smile....just like Jason's does.

One of my fav DIY sites [aside from those already mentioned] is Rod Elliot's ESP. http://sound.whsites.net/index2.html He has quite a number of projects covering all aspects of audio and has a very pragmatic approach. http://sound.whsites.net/projects-0.htm His P3 and P3A amp has been built and...

Yep...outstanding. It took a few years until Youtube vids started coming out that I found out what he was doing on 'Discipline'. Couldn't work it out but knew I liked it. I now know it was the 'Chapman Stick' which combines bass and electric guitar and more...

I was just about to plug for Frank myself. :-) Not only a great player but extremely inventive, particularly around time signatures. Not many rock (or jazz ....aside from Brubeck) players stray from 4/4. For example Keep It Greasy the first verse and guitar solo are counted in 19/16 and...

Subjectively, because as a Mech Eng I find it quite beautiful...it's design gives me pleasure. :) Reason enough?

I've still got my two sliderules in a draw right next to me....together with my first calculator, the venerable HP-45. But what I always lusted after was a Curta that was advertised in the back of Scientific American. Never knew anyone who had one. There is a very interesting story around...

As we have been discussing SMD soldering I have a question re the regulators. I have not soldered any SDM with rear pads before. Is there any special technique? Or do I just ensure that I have flux on the PCB pad and let the solder flow as usual?

That's a nice coincidence...a bunch of Vonnegut fans. I'm in the middle of reading a book of Kurt's letters. Great man. A little mixed up, but a great human. To this day Slaughterhouse Five is one of my very favorite books. And Kilgore Trout and Billy Pilgrim are my favorite literary...

No worries Dieselmat! Hi Paladin. For $30 they look hard to beat. And 10kV! Not the sort of voltages you'd want in a headphone amp. :-) I also love the 'how to repair telephones' photo in the ad. The one shown in my photo is my current favorite. EEV Blog Brymen BM235...

PS. As you are only making comparisons, even an el-cheapo multimeter (without true RMS) may do the trick.

    Unofficial: Schiit DIY Coaster Amp

Yes, Paladin is quite correct, a scope makes this a very easy process. However you could probably also do the matching with a reasonable quality ‘true RMS’ multimeter. The requirements for tube matching are to produce a 250 mV sinewave at 1000 Hz. And to measure approx. 1 V at 1000Hz. But as...

Thanks for starting the thread Rensek. I've got a couple of unbuilt decade old Oatley Electronics K272 6418 headphone kits plus some spare tubes at the bottom of my parts bin so I'm up for a coaster build. http://diyaudioprojects.com/Tubes/6418-Tube-Preamp-Headphone-Kit/ I may even build up...

At first glance I thought "that doesn't look too crazy small to solder"....... .......and then I saw the liddle biddy thing next to R15. Yikes!

Agreed. And a separate thread would allow Jason to put some distance between all the crazy customizations that are likely to be made by DIYers. He has already made it clear that he does not want to associated with any attempts to bump up the HT for example. [my iron is warming up]

Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

This one made me laugh out loud some years ago.... The photo shows a Brush Tail Possum. It certainly would not be happy being handled and the story goes that the poster was put up by some visiting Japanese students who obviously hadn't much experience with our local wildlife. [sadly I have...

Hey....don't stress Jason. It will be ready when it is ready. More important to put your energy into family, friends and time out than to make a tough deadline for yourself. Besides, all the evidence I have seen in this thread points to you being the opposite to 'terrible'. :)
