High Quality In-line Volume Attenuator
Thanks! How does it compare to the Shure adjustable one? -
High Quality In-line Volume Attenuator
Here is the item we are referring to: Shure * - Attachable Volume Control Surely someone makes a higher-quality volume control? It seems like it's nothing but a variable resistor - how hard might it be to build my own? Or a fixed-resistance attenuator, perhaps? -
High Quality In-line Volume Attenuator
Mine just broke yesterday, so I'm looking for a replacement as well. The Shures have such a low impedance that nearly every source is incredibly noisy, not to mention loud. Even my Samsung YP-P2 has a significant amount of fuzz without the attenuator. I don't want to blow $20 on another one of... -

Jays q-JAYS, First look, Production level !!
And how does one make homemade foamies? Ditto on the request for a comparison with the M5's. EDIT: Nevermind, I did a search for "homemade foamies" and found a nice long thread about it from March 2006.- DrewWinters

OMG what have I done
I don't have much time, so I haven't read the whole thread... let me second anyone who has surely already said this: let them burn in! I had never heard of burn-in when I bought my HD-650's. I was NOT a happy camper at first. The difference in the sound over time sent me on an internet search...- DrewWinters

Jays q-JAYS & s-JAYS, Prototype impressions
Are their pictures around of either case? I haven't found any yet, but I'm at work and I've already wasted too much time today reading Head-Fi... I should probably stop searching and get back to work... I'm rather anxious to get a pair of q-JAYS now... I feel really sorry for you guys who...- DrewWinters

People say that the HD650 improves after some use?
Ditto on the sound quality changing. The difference was so obvious I went looking for an explanation (I hadn't heard of "break-in" before - I had convinced myself it had been an illusion when I had heard it in the past). One more thing to note: I starting using mine with a Headroom Total...- DrewWinters

DVD-A and Pioneer Elite DV-59AVi
Yes, I know I need a TV... but in between my buying the Pioneer and getting a TV I decided to go to graduate school... so my funding dried up rather quickly for things like that... I have hooked it up to my roomate's TV for set-up, but I have nothing to use on a regular basis. Thank you for...- DrewWinters

DVD-A and Pioneer Elite DV-59AVi
Thanks, the PCM track is also 48khz btw. I was hoping someone with a DV-59AVi would know whether or not the "5.1" or "DTS" should be lighting up if it is using the 5.1 or 6.1 DTS track rather than the 2.0 PCM track like it does when playing a movie. Also, I have the connectors going to the...- DrewWinters

DVD-A and Pioneer Elite DV-59AVi
So I bought my first DVD-A recently, The Crystal Method, "Legion of Boom". It seems to insist on playing the DVD-Video section of the disc. The disc has three audio tracks: 5.1 DVD-A 6.1 DTS-ES 2.0 PCM I have it set to play the DVD-A section, but of course, I also have it set for stereo...- DrewWinters

"The sound will improve with the display turned off"?
While I don't have the manuals next to me to quote from, both my Alpine head unit in my car and my Pioneer DV-59AVi have a similar function. If memory serves me, both refered to this as a way of shutting down the circuitry. This would imply to me that the expected benefit comes from the...- DrewWinters

Seeking Electronic Music Recommendations
Paul Oakenfold - Another World and Paul van Dyke - Global (it's kinda a "greatest hits" album) are two of my favorites. Ditto on the Crystal Method recommendations. Different style from the two Paul's, but every bit as good. I don't think they've put out a bad album. Aphex Twin is amazing...- DrewWinters

Klipsch Promedia Mod?
Because the sub enclosure is not sealed (it's a 6th order bandpass according to the published info - but it looks like a normal ported enclosure) it will be very sensitive to the driver you use. Since T/S parameters are not available for the drivers currently being used in the sub, your chances... -
Subwoofer Reccomedations
Good call D-EJ915, the size of the subwoofer depends dramatically on the size of the room involved. For instance, in your room, assuming an 8' ceiling, your lowest mode is at 51.3Hz. This means that at 25.65hz you are getting +12db "cabin gain". Since the average 10" sealed sub starts to... -
I'm a believer
The first time I noticed a cable difference was actually video quality. When your S-video looks better than your Component, you know you have a problem. It was a mildly-upgraded S-video cable (Monster Power) vs. stock super-cheapy component cables. We could A/B them quickly and easily and the... -
Adding Mass to Subwoofer Enclosure
It's sitting on a tile-over-concrete floor (used to be a garage) - I'm not worried about weight. It's already on rubber feet, but that doesn't prevent the top of the sub from vibrating, of course, which is what I want. -
Bucking Magnets?
I've been reading, but everything I've read has assumed I know things I don't... Bucking magnets increase the BL of a speaker. Is this good or bad? How do bucking magnets affect the Qes of the speaker? (Does it?) Where the heck do I buy them in sufficient size for a 120oz. subwoofer...- DrewWinters

Adding Mass to Subwoofer Enclosure
The vibration has been diminished, but not eradicated. I couldn't use it as a coffee table if I wanted to, for instance (not that it would make a good one anyway... too tall!). No dramatic audible differences, but I didn't expect there to be. I didn't do any before and after critical... -
Adding Mass to Subwoofer Enclosure
Thanks! Currently, the longest un-braced span in the box is about 12" - which, I was told was a good rule of thumb. The average distance between braces is around 7", with most of them being on the small side - just the compartments immediately next to the driver itself are larger (it's hard to... -
Adding Mass to Subwoofer Enclosure
Well, we'll be putting the sub back together tonight, it is certainly quite a bit heavier... we'll see if it helps... ooheadsoo, why should I damp the woofer basket? What will that do? Noone has any thoughts on my odd subwoofer design drawing? -
