k1000 owners club
With respect to the discussion about amps designed to drive the AKG K1000s, I was informed by a builder and designer of some Bottlehead Audio tube amps that the Bottlehead Paramount Monoblock Amps were designed specifically to optimize the performance of the K1Ks, which were so beloved by Dan...- Wharfrat

Dear Fellow K1000 Owners...glad to make your acquaintance, all. Just took the leap for a mint pair of K1Ks that were previously owned by someone associated with Stefan Audio Art...I can't quite get its ownership pedigree right yet, but suffice to say it is in absolutely mint condition and came...- Wharfrat

Primaluna Dialogue Premium HP integrated vs. ALO Studio Six for Audeze LCD-3Fs--thoughts please?
@hptubes and ginster6, Thanks for your comments...I have had more time with the PL and Harbeth combo and have to say it is magical at times with the right recording. Funny you should mention an upgrade "itch"...as it turned out, I wanted an improvement over the Audio Technica AD2Ks without...- Wharfrat

Primaluna Dialogue Premium HP integrated vs. ALO Studio Six for Audeze LCD-3Fs--thoughts please?
Hello, HPTubes, Have not been on Head-Fi forums for a while, primarily due to encountering folks at a local audio shop where I live who were very generous in their equipment audition program by allowing me to be seduced by a pair of Spendor S2/R3 speakers after I bought a Coffman GHA-1...- Wharfrat

Unboxing Audeze LCD-X and LCD-XC tonight
I have the Coffman GA-1 headphone amp and just read a quite interesting review in The Absolute Sound mag about the LCD-X which the reviewer praised quite highly. The amp pairing was the Pathos, with the source running through a PS Audio PureDac. Since you did alot of listening with the LCD-X...- Wharfrat

Quattro De Mayo Seattle meet. 5/04/13 West Seattle Library
Big Pops, Any clue for us clueless folks as to the needs of the day? How many tables are available and such? If it starts at ten am, is it the library opening time and those not bringing gear can expect much of the tube gear warmed up properly for a quality listen an hour or so later? Do...- Wharfrat

I will be bringing the Coffman G1-A and a Cayin ST-50 source, along with a few mid-fi cans. I might bring a vintage Pioneer receiver just to show how good gear was back in the day.- Wharfrat

Quattro De Mayo Seattle meet. 5/04/13 West Seattle Library
J- If you are on the move for a used VPI or SOTA TT, you might want to check with Kurt at Echo Audio and Bill Davidson at Fred's Sound of Music, both in Portland Echo had a SOTA Sapphire that is in gorgeously grained blonde-black wood. Can't remember the cartridge tho. Saw it for $1,300...- Wharfrat

Quote: Whoot, dude? I thought you were taking the D7000s to your grave! Josh: I really haven't plumbed the depths of this amp...the phonostage is very good and I expect it will get better as the Sumiko Pearl cartridge on my Sota Comet TT goes thru its break-in period. With...- Wharfrat

Count me in. I have new gear that I'd like the gang to take a listen to...check out the Coffman G1-A all-tube analog phono preamp/headphone amp at the Coffman Audio Labs website. I'll bring it and am looking forward to paring it with the planar magnetics...so far, I think the dang thing has...- Wharfrat

Portland Head-Fi Meet (03/02/13) at Echo Audio - Impressions/Pics
Quote: I could not agree more with sheldon. The HA-1 headphone amp is going to be something and is way up there near the top of the class of reference headphone amps, I would gainsay. It remains a spiritual revelation every time I put in well-recorded CDs. The tone and timbre of...- Wharfrat

Portland Area Head-fi Meet: Echo Audio - 03/02/13
I will be coming down to Echo around noon or 1 pm to settle the Coffman amp business (yes, I lost all measure of sanity) and unfortunately, won't be able to stay for the meet with my own gear as I have to be in Vancouver by 4 for a 50th birthday dinner...however, would like to see what is there...- Wharfrat

Cary Audio release Nighthawk Headphone Amp May 21st - 1200 USD
I should have made my statement about Chris being a good reviewer with a qualifying statement....he's a "good reviewer with headphones" only in the sense that he's the only one I am aware of that has a subscribing audience through an audio "magazine", even if it is online. He seems to devote...- Wharfrat

Battle Of The Flagships (58 Headphones Compared)
Hey David, wonderful write-up. I originally used your Top 20 list back in 2010 to get my DT-880/250, HD-650 (Thanks to DaveDerek), a prototype HE-6 and HE-5, D-7000, AKG-501 and 702 in my collection. My personal fave is the ATH-AD2000. However, I am inclined to agree that since then...- Wharfrat

Using full sized integrated amp
Glad to have stumbled across this thread...more goodies to hunt for. Perhaps there is a sleeper unit or two that is of more recent make and hasn't been scoped out by the price-driving EBay crowd....vintage gear still has the looks department all sewn up....- Wharfrat

Cary Audio release Nighthawk Headphone Amp May 21st - 1200 USD
A sign of life is a good sign indeed...looking forward to the review. Noted the output impedance on the HH-1 hybrid design is 5 ohms...same as the NH, which is a solid state. Read somewhere that most quality SS amps have output impedance levels below 1 ohm and one gets alot less audible...- Wharfrat

Cary Audio release Nighthawk Headphone Amp May 21st - 1200 USD
What...three weeks and no listening impressions post? I read the NH review on the enjoythemusic.com website, but much prefer the insight of Head-fiers here. Thing is I am into vintage gear and the bang for the buck I get with 70's integrateds and receivers compared to other mid...- Wharfrat

Calling All "Vintage" Integrated/Receiver Owners
Quote: I used to have the 7220PE. I used it as a preamp to feed my EF5 tube amp, Later, I tried the headphone output on it and was pleasantly surprised at how good it sounded, but by that time I had the SX-1250 and 2275, so did not have a need to hang on to it. I think it is worth saving...- Wharfrat

Seattle/Bottlehead Meet 8/4/2012 Impressions thread
Thanks to Big Poppa and Doc, respectively, for putting on and hosting the meet. This time around I had a chance to talk with more people and to meet some new faces. Pop's wife, Cheryl, was fun to talk to...she even remembered it would have been Jerry Garcia's 70th birthday on 8/1. Guess we...- Wharfrat

No...Don't go there! You will be damned for all time! I went there and have suffered immeasurable pleasure and much financial ruin! Seattle Meet at Bottlehead Headquarters 8/04/2012
All packed up with a minor change in my gear list...Since table space will be at a premium, I will bring a folding table and some folding chairs. Won't be bringing the Scott tube amp, though. Not enough room to fit the CD player and the two receivers and 4 headphones. I'll bring a Marantz 2275...- Wharfrat

Calling All "Vintage" Integrated/Receiver Owners
