Seeking modestly-priced amp for HD650, analysis paralysis setting in...
Thanks for the suggestion, I'll check it out. Any reason to spring for the Uber, if I'm not planning to ever use it as a preamp or to drive speakers?- tlniec

Seeking modestly-priced amp for HD650, analysis paralysis setting in...
Hard to believe it's been almost 3 years since I last posted here! I have been lurking again lately, doing lots of searching, reading lots of posts. But I haven't seen anything that addresses my exact situation, hence this thread. So, I have had my beloved HD650s for a few years now. ...- tlniec

Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread
Anyone know of a modestly-priced, readily-availble HD650 cable that is 3 to 4 feet long? There are times where I appreciate the length of the stock cable. But generally, I find it's a bit of a hassle. It could be as simple as some dude on e-bay selling stock cables that have been cut down and...- tlniec

fiio e17 speculations?
Wow, that E15 news came out of nowhere and sort of deflated my interest in the E17! Now I'll just have to figure out what to do with the ol' E7+E9 once the E15 comes around.- tlniec

Free Comply Tips for a review
If head-fi posting DOES count, I'd glady write a review of the Comply tips when used with MEElectronic M6 and/or Brainwavz M2 IEMs. I'm curious how they would compare to the stock silicone tips I'm currently using.- tlniec

Testing audiophile claims and myths
I hate to say "so why even bother," but this, to me, gets to the heart of the matter. If tiny, mundane variations like positioning on your head, seal, how much wax happens to be in your ears that day, etc -- even with THE SAME headphone -- are capable of producing audibly different sound, then...- tlniec

The Official Fiio E9 Thread with Video Unbox-Review
That's what I ended up doing, for my gaming setup. It's easy enough to put my Mixamp within reach of me on the couch (it is wireless after all), but the cord on the wall-wart supplied with the E9 isn't even close to long enough to reach from the nearest outlet to my seating position. I...- tlniec

Sansa Clip+ Review With Detailed Measurements
Excellent review -- and not just because it reaffirms my love for the Clip+! :-) Very cool to see relevant measurements depicted graphically, and it was nice that you included some extra explanatory text to help readers understand what some of the values mean/what numbers may represent an...- tlniec

Which headphones should I get for my Astro MIxamp? Ath-AD900, Beyer dt880s, or KGS 70
I can't comment on the PS3 specifically, but I've listened to a few concerts (one on Blu-Ray, one on HD-DVD) using optical-out to my Mixamp, into my E9, into my HD650s. In my opinion, if you use 2-channel PCM or Dolby Stereo, and keep the Dolby Headphone DSP turned off, this can sound GREAT. I...- tlniec

E-MU 0204 USB: Damn, They've Done it Again! And for $129!!!
Not to drift too far OT, but it's interesting to note that similar discussions take place in video circles. But there, the focus tends to be on the source media more so than the playback equipment. In a nutshell, one of the more frustrating things happening in the Blu-Ray disc world is movies...- tlniec

fiio e17 speculations?
Right - I think what he's saying is, he hopes the E17 will be configured such that you can physically plug in a coax/spdif cable when the unit is docked (i.e. those jacks are not placed on the same face as the dock connector) and that engaging the dock connector doesn't force (e.g. via...- tlniec

E-MU 0204 USB: Damn, They've Done it Again! And for $129!!!
Another way to look at this, perhaps... communications equipment (i.e. radios) ROUTINELY perform ADC, DAC, and amplification functions on signals in the GHz frequencies. We can get a transmitter to "talk to" a receiver (provided it's using the appropriate protocol/waveform and tuned to the...- tlniec

Clip+ battery sucks
Well, the Clip+ is a TINY portable device. It packs a pretty large amount of functionality. And it's quite inexpensive. Given that, I wouldn't expect it to utilize exotic battery technology to maximize battery life and minimize weight (though since they're using a Lithium-based battery...- tlniec

Audio-GD NFB-12
Not sure what the ranges are on the scope (so I can't tell frequency of the output signal). But isn't a square wave essentially a superposition of sines? So your output is likely a 10KHz sine using 48KHz sampling, a 10KHz sine-ish wave at 96KHz sampling, and finally a squarish wave with a...- tlniec

under $200 dac/amp combo's for HD650's
There's at least a handful of folks using (or who have used) the E7/E9/HD650 combo. Myself included. In my opinion, it works very well, and I like the versatility of a 2-box solution versus a combined DAC/amp unit -- mainly due to connectivity. I've noticed a lot of combined DAC/amp units in...- tlniec

Does the Astro 5.8 Mixamp act as a normal amp. for music?
You can use it as an amp for music as well. You'll need to have a source with an optical/toslink output to plug into it, and you'll most likely want to turn off the Dolby Headphone DSP when listening to music (that'd be the button on the right side of the Tx unit). As for how satisfactory...- tlniec

Sennheiser HD 600 Impressions Thread
Right, an amp has to be fed an analog audio signal (which would be the output of a DAC). There are DAC/amp combos out there, where you feed a digital signal in, and get an amplified analog signal out (straight to your headphones). But if it's just an amp, you'll have to have a DAC in the chain...- tlniec

Rockbox woes...
I'm intrigued... I tried the stock Crossfeed plugin briefly, and while it was interesting, I ultimately decided to keep it turned off (I felt its negatives outweighed its advantages). I'd sure be willing to give another crossfeed plugin a try, though. Is the Meier crossfeed available as a...- tlniec

What's the best mini to1/4 adapter?
Assuming you mean mini-plug to 1/4" jack, I like the one that came with my HD-650s. Not sure if Sennheiser sells it separately (I'd think so). I like that it uses a short length of cable instead of being one solid piece -- I used to worry that the adapter with my old HD595s (which was just a... -
ATH-M50s - Dolby 5.1 Compatible?
I will confess, I'm not familiar with your Receiver (I do own two Sony A/VRs -- an STR-DG910 and STR-DG510 -- as far as I know, neither does Dolby Headphone processing, and I would guess yours may not either). If it turns out your receiver doesn't, you have a couple of options. It's entirely...- tlniec

FiiO E9 Review
My understanding is there's a resistor (33 Ohms, maybe?) inline with the 3.5mm jack, to pad the signal down by ~5dB. It's set up that way for exactly the reason you mentioned -- it allows you to get more useful travel on the volume knob when using sensitive headphones/IEMs. I haven't tried the...- tlniec
