WiFi Hotspot Security
I just got a laptop with built-in WiFi, and I'd like to be able to surf the web at some of the local "hot spots" but I'm concerned about security. Most of the practical info I've found in books and on-line concentrates on setting up your own wireless network, which I'm not interested in. So...- Davie

The Evils of Visual Basic
I've heard it said many times that learning programming through Visual Basic leads to "bad programming habits." I've had a really hard time, however, finding out specifically what these bad habits actually are -- which would be helpful if I'm to overcome them as I attempt a transition out of the...- Davie

Mandrake Linux Installation Woes
OK, I know it's officially "Mandriva," but that's just such a lame name... Also I know there must be specialized Mandrake forums, but I've always gotten good advice here in the past about technical matters, so I thought I'd give it a shot. I've been wanting to try out Linux for awhile and...- Davie

AKG K 26 P Headband Woes
It's been mentioned in other threads that the headband of these cans really sucks, but I'm finding it pretty painful to wear these at the moment. The first pair I got was bad enough -- had to return it because of a bum plug. The replacment pair is even more uncomfortable -- tries to slide back...- Davie

Creative MuVo N200/Micro FM Recording Question
I am currently separated from my N200 manual (the downloadable one on the Creative web site isn't working on my computer, for some reason) and need to record a radio program. If anybody knows the anwer and has the manual handy I'd greatly appreciate some help. I have no trouble making a...- Davie

Help me record audio using line in on my PC!
Here's the situation -- I'm going from a tape deck to the mic in on my PC. To make sure I know what's coming out of the tape deck, I'm recording from the headphone jack, though the same problems are happening when I use the line out. I am unable to monitor the recording through the PC while I'm...- Davie

shure e3c's and burn in
Is there any definitive word on whether burn in is possible with these? I've had them for a few months and my impression is that they're sounding alot better now than at the beginning. I'm pretty sure this isn't purely a matter of getting used to them since I actually spend most of my time...- Davie

In search of decent basic mp3 mixing software
Cheap (or free!) would be nice. The main thing I'm looking for is control over fades and cue points. The model is definitely old fashioned radio jock, not big time club dj. The ability to set track divisions for CDs would also be good. Beat matching would be nice too, but is less important...- Davie

Convert realaudio to mp3?
Is it legal to convert downloaded realaudio format files to mp3 for personal use. If so, does anyone know of any Windows software to do this, especially at faster than real time playback speeds? Thanks.- Davie

Vestax Handy Trax White Noise Problem
In an effort to fit some vinyl listening into my small New York City apartment, I picked up a Vestax Handy Trax portable turntable: http://www.vestax.com/products/HandyTrax.htm It's really cute, and light, but I get, like, a blizzard of white noise from both the headphone jack and the line...- Davie

Help me buy a fridge for my apartment!!
I live in a small, New York City apartment. I desperately need a new fridge. Problem is, the fridge "slot" in my kitchen is so small that only a few companies make refrigerators the right size, and apart from Sears Kenmore none of them are the major brands. So far I've found possibilities from...- Davie

NY Times: Music Industry Is Trying Out Digital-Only Releases
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/11/22/bu...2music.html?hp "...an experiment by Universal Music Group. Universal, which like other record companies has heavily relied on profits from sales of CD's, has signed the artists to a digital-only label. Starting Tuesday, it will release songs through...- Davie

Zen Micro Ads on NYC Subway
...over. Apparently Creative has decided to try to reach the urban hipsters riding the underground rails in the big apple. Instead of dancing silhouettes, they've got *colors*! Seriously, another sign that Creative thinks that they've got a winner with the Micro and can take on Apple...- Davie

Canal phones sensitivity: Ety 6i vs. 4p vs. Shure 3c
I'm thinking of upgrading from the shure E2cs. These phones are driven fairly well by my new Creative N200 flash player, which has a pretty wimpy amp (perhaps due to the fact that it's rated at 15 hours on a single AAA!!). Can anybody tell me how easy the above phones are to drive unamped...- Davie

Ipod and Windows: Ok together?
I'm afraid my experience with my new 4g ipod on my Windows XP machine has been kind of ugly. After retrying unsuccessfully a few times I opted for continue but when the installation...- Davie

ipod pausing with poor headphone connection?
Well, I just bought an ipod 4G 20gb to replace my Karma. One of the first things I noticed is that the thing would pause spontaneously, seemingly at random. After checking on the apple forums and ipod lounge, I found that it is a "feature" of the ipod that it pauses when the headphones are...- Davie

Iriver IHP-120/Rio Carbon/Ipod: Scroll within mp3 track?
I'm considering these as a replacement for my busted Karma. One nice feature of the Karma is that it was easy to position yourself at any point within a track. I have some mp3 mixes that are 1hr+ and it was really nice to be able to jump to 30 or 45 minutes through easily. Some other players...- Davie
