Decent cordless drill under $100?
Corded drills are still way better dollar for dollar than cordless- lighter, stronger. I can strongly recommend Makita. If you are on a budget, check out your local pawn shops.- AtomBoy

Diamond Buffers
Someone might sell you a board, but I think the group buy is over. Steinchen's page on the diamond buffers for the Millett Hybrid is here: http://www.diamondstar.de/dDB_overview.html - tons o' links and design info. There's also discussion here...- AtomBoy

I successfully etched my own board and built an amp with it ! Pics inside !!!
Nice work- congrats! What transparancy film did you use for the transfer and how was it? I've been using inkjet photo paper and its a very squirrely process with the wrong brand. Staples Photo Basic item# 471861 is whats working best so far, but it could be better.- AtomBoy

How to make fantastic PCB's everytime.
I am cheap cheap cheap, so I am willing to do a little extra cleanup on the slightly dingy copper clad board I get from Goldmine. http://www.goldmine-elec-products.co....asp?dept=1034- AtomBoy

help with chassis layout
If it were me (and its not) I'd go for option 2- mount everything on the base and cut hole(s) in the lid for it all to poke through. Lining everything up well and using 'gasket' material to cover the gaps could make for a pretty sanitary look without the mess of long wires or finicky connectors...- AtomBoy

Linear regulated power supply for Millet
I use a Condor HA24-0.5A with one of my Millett Hybrids and it works great- dead quiet. You'll still have to solder things to it, so it still counts as DIY in my book! Edit: e-bay often has good deals on these- I got mine for 10 bucks.- AtomBoy

Want to build amp where to learn fundamentals?
Pete Millett has scanned and posted a bunch of great old books here: http://www.pmillett.com/technical_books_online.htm I got a lot out of 'Basic Theory and Applications of Electron Tubes'. The rest of Pete's site is a goldmine as well. There's also some good theory info here...- AtomBoy

Best DMM under $50
eBay is great, or you could spend 50 clams on stuff at Circuit Specialists and get a free MM. I've been using the freebie for months and it works fine. http://www.circuitspecialists.com/level.itml/icOid/190- AtomBoy

looking for a chip to read proximity
It sounds like you're looking for a QTouch chip from QProx: http://www.qprox.com/products/index.php I have had a QT411 for a few months with the idea I'd make a volume control. I'm still in the research phase- reading PIC literature.- AtomBoy

cd tweaks
I wold respectufuly sugest that the effect of any of the tweaks mentioned on that page would exist purely in the mind of the listener. I would also sugest that that doesn't make it any less of a real effect. It realy does sound better because you tell yourself it will sound better.- AtomBoy

Dynalo in my future?
You know you want to. I have a Millett and A Dynalo. Things that I enjoy listening to on the Millett, the Dynalo reveals as being horribly recorded or encoded, but a good recording sounds fantastic and super detailed on the Dynalo. The Millett is a camera lens smeared with vaseline- all the...- AtomBoy

Interesting reading.........
Just at first glance, it doesn't look like the kind of stuff you could tack on to an opamp based circuit and implementing the tube schematic would be expensive/ hazardous. I was daydreaming about using some of the dozens of small transistors I have left over from various projects.- AtomBoy

Interesting reading.........
The PDF is here: http://www.tubecad.com/articles_2002...ic_Control.pdf It's linked from the front page of: http://www.tubecad.com/ (the column on the left, 8 articles down). How hard would it be to do a transistor version of his headphone amp schematic?- AtomBoy

Dad has taken up woodwork in his retirement so I sent him a Millett Hybrid for him to case up. I thought I might get a nice little box... The little window is the tuning window from his aunt's old radio. You can make out the tuning dial in the drawer. The knob is also from the old radio...- AtomBoy

If I had a point, it might have been that psychoacoustic effects could be considered as real. You could examine and acknowledge them and plan for good ones. Become an accomplice to your own sonic deception because there is an astonishing amount of deception going on anyway. I'm not referring to...- AtomBoy

Reality is illusion
There's an interesting article here on Science Daily about expectation affecting perception. The jist of it is that things tend to be like what you expect them to be like. The study used taste, but I believe you could easily substitute the sonics of silver vs copper wire for the taste of sugar...- AtomBoy
