Gryphon Kalliope - First impressions
I took delivery of a Gryphon Kalliope about a couple weeks ago. We're upgrading our system to handle hi rez formats with retrieval on demand. The Kalliope is the only DAC to have bested our venerable Dodson 217 Mark II D (with extensive upgrades by Silversmith Audio) and even then it was...- saidentary

Consider the Linear Tube Audio MicroZOTL 2 (or MicroZOTL 3 [if you can swing it]). I can't compare the VC to the legendary Abyss, but...I can say that with the MicroZOTL 2, the bass (of the VC) absolutely ROCKS!- saidentary

Might I humbly suggest the Linear Tube Audio MicroZOTL 2 (or even the MicroZOTL 3, which I've never heard, but which people say is even better) for your sub-bass evaluation? Just a thought.- saidentary

Want to buy a Dodson DA-218 (preferred) or Dodson DA-217 Mark II D (also acceptable). It doesn't have to be absolutely pristine, but the unit should be in good working order. If not, then in order for me to buy it it would have to be "fixable" by Jeffrey Smith of Silversmith Audio. Please...- saidentary

My main hypothesis: These headphones don't exaggerate the high end or the low end, so they may not fully satisfy the "boom and sizzle" crowd of headphone audiophiles. And, because of this lack of "gimmickry" they might sound "ordinary" to some listeners. I think this may be one of the factors...- saidentary

...and a genius with principles, ethics, vision, pragmatism, and drive. His product line is the beautiful result of all those traits that he has.* *It almost certainly also doesn't hurt to have the magnificent Bevin at his side (and probably sometimes in front of him, calling the shots [I say...- saidentary

microZOTL 3 by Linear Tube Audio. True High End Audio.
It says a lot that you weren't even planning to consider the MZ3 due to its price, but after hearing it you completely reversed yourself. I would describe such an experience as a "signature moment" in an audiophile's journey. I would humbly suggest that you enjoy it, savor it, and don't look...- saidentary

MICROZOTL2 Tube Headphone Amp and preamp: a breakthrough device
I had the original switching power supply for about five years and finally upgraded the power supply to the LPS. I was in the process of upgrading power supplies to my Project CD Box S CD player and the Arcam irDAC also, so I decided to upgrade the power supply of the MicroZOTL 2 (serial number...- saidentary

MICROZOTL2 Tube Headphone Amp and preamp: a breakthrough device
The MicroZOTL 2 pairs fabulously well with the Verite Closed. I own both and have commented on this thread and even more extensively (I think) on the Verite Closed thread. And yes, smooth detailed high end, plenty of low tight bass, great transient attack. To my ears, the sound approaches...- saidentary

FWIW: The VC can handle organ fugues with ease. That's saying something, in my opinion. Here are some links to Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor:- saidentary

The ZMF Verite Closed through the MicroZOTL 2 amplifier and Arcam irDAC actually appear to do this justice. This is what dancing really is: Sing sing sing: Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers--This is what people were talking about! Click this!- saidentary

MICROZOTL2 Tube Headphone Amp and preamp: a breakthrough device
I own the HiFiMAN HE1000 version one, which is planar magnetic. I also own the ZMF Verite Closed, which is dynamic. Both sound fantastic with the MicroZOTL 2, which I also own. In my opinion the HE-1000 is a fabulous headphone, but the ZMF Verite Closed is even better.- saidentary

My take is this: It's simple. ZMF is one of the very VERY few manufacturers (of anything, anywhere on earth) still in existence whose principles outweigh their profit motive. Making headphones of this singular quality takes TIME, and is a labor intensive process. I suspect that Zach of ZMF is...- saidentary

For me the effect was MUCH quicker than that. A few hours, once thru the protocol stipulated in the instructions, as I recall. But I'm not the talisman of truth for all audiophiles or even headphone audiophiles. Your experience may differ or even be completely opposite of mine. But I hope it...- saidentary

Another thing to try might be a burning in CD. I had a perception of minimal harshness when I compared the VC to my HiFiMAN HE-1000 (version one). This appeared to resolve completely after using the Purist Audio System Enhancer CD (Rev B). Might be helpful to try something similar.- saidentary

I think that adaptive output impedance matching thing is correct, but I'm no expert on that. My understanding of impedance is quite rudimentary, and when I've tried to read about it there seem to be contradictory opinions, or at least inconsistencies. But it could also be that I just haven't...- saidentary

No kidding. There's a reason for that. Sometimes the meritocracy still works. Very very happy for ZMF and its hard-earned, well deserved success. Eventually he'll catch up with demand, I suspect, because this is still a niche market. In the mean time, it's worth the wait for a product of this...- saidentary
