I went through this thread about break-in time of the VC and found this post. Now my Stab VC actually gaives me this upper-mid shrill (with Auteur Solid / Auteur Hybrid) with Lavri Cable Grand XLR cable, which is quite annoying. The cable worked perflectly with the VO Silkwood (having around 300Hrs on them) /Verite Pref Pads with no shrill at all. I sold my VO to get the VC Stab.

Now the VC Stab is around 55-60 hours mark, and I hope this shrill goes away with break in (150-200-250Hr or whatever), otherwise, it's pity that I have to let this pair go. I really wish I can keep it as I love the look and comfort.

Another thing to try might be a burning in CD. I had a perception of minimal harshness when I compared the VC to my HiFiMAN HE-1000 (version one). This appeared to resolve completely after using the Purist Audio System Enhancer CD (Rev B). Might be helpful to try something similar.

Certainly try some other pads before you give up. I have 2 types of Auteur pads and don't like either of them. However the Universe suede are excellent, as is the suede BE-2.

Have you tried the leather BE2 or leather verite? How’s the difference between universe and BE2 suede. I’m going to order the leathers but was curious about the neutral suede options as well.

I've not tried any of the leather just because I don't buy leather. But I think the suede is just a bit more neutral. The universe gives that 3D holographic experience, while the BE-2 make it more neutral and detailed with a smaller soundstage. I use the Universe the most.

They are mostly like a blue/aqua with some spots of like a golden orange. It doesn't really holograph like some others when moving them but I can get a vid of them.
