Interesting comparison of the Markl D5000 against the Ed9 But I'm still waiting for a detailed comparison of the Markl D5000 against the ATH-AD2000.

Asr mentions that the gilmore lite from headamp is REALLY good with the AD2000, but I don't know about the W5000. Perhaps you could consider the more powerful headamp GS-1. Also, this could be a useful link. It's a list of amps that many W5000 owners have...

If it's midrange and vocals you're looking for, I would definitely say go with an Audio technica ad2000.

What are some really good synergizing amps for the AD2000? I've read the SS amps are better as the AD2Ks are pretty transparent. I've heard about gilmore lite / GS-1 being pretty good amps for the AD2K. How much better is the GS-1 over the lite?

And on top of the markl mod, a nice amp will significantly improve your d2000's.

How much does markl charge to have it modded?

I would go for a D2000 and use the extra money to buy a nice, solid amp to make them shine their best. From what I've heard, there is minimal differences between D2000 and D5000 (Cables and earcups as far as I know).
