I have a pair of the 770/80's and for R&B, Jazz, and anything with a need for some bottom the 770 is your best bet. I have not tried the 555 but I have tried the 650's with my Hornet and I still prefer my 770 to the 650's. I am looking to try a pair of 880's to see if they are worth changing...

Looks like at the $500 range your not going to get anything really good at the desktop level. At that price point you are still looking at portables, some pretty good ones can be had at that price. However, you are going to have to go to $1000.00 or better unless your ready to start DIY'ing.

I would go with something like a Headroom AirHead amp. $100 and you are on your way. This as the first amp I bought and us it now for my desktop amp since my Hornet is always hooked to my Classic 160. With the AirHead you don't have to get an interconnect unless you want to, the mini-to-mini SQ...

I have a set of Beyer 770's and would lose my mind if the soft plush covering on the pads got wet from sweat. :-)

Go with the 160, you will always need more space. Maybe not today but just when you think you don't want to deal with Lossless you hear or see something that takes you over to the dark side because you know you have to space to pack it around with :-)
