I'm generally a big fan of progressive metal, and have really enjoyed the 5th track of Dream Theater's "Train of Thought" (Vacant), as well as Appocalyptica's Reflections. Can anybody suggest more music of a similar genre -- that includes violins or cellos? It doesn't have to be hardcore metal...

I got mine and they're pretty great. Decent isolation, good sound, love the foldability. And the coiled cord is cool.

I'd vote for the 497. I have those and Grado 125s and tend to use the 497s most of the time because they are much quieter on the outside. When you factor in the price difference, the 497s are probably one of the best bang for the buck cans.

I've had both Sony(SR-7k) and IBM(T23) laptops and like the headphone out in both of them. I also used an HP laptop - its sound card left something to be desired. I love my IBM's sound and I think it's a much better value than the Sony because it feels more solid and won't break quite so easily...

While I agree with the previous posters about most of their points, I do think you should reconsider the angle of the headphones on your head. When I'm wearing mine, the headband is more to the front than I first expected . . . I suggest trying to make sure that the pads are colinear with your ears.

Is there any sort of a resale market for them (other than head-fi)? It seems that nobody outside of head-fiers has heard of them . . . I've been looking for a used set for a while with no luck.

Down here in San Diego, they'll be performing in a small venue that can only accomodate DT and QR: fates warning won't be playing. Do you guys think it's still worthwhile to see them? I'm a huge Dream Theater fan . . . maybe it's worth it to drive up to LA to see Fates?

The HD497s are rather durable. I've had problems with headphones breaking or getting scratched up, but the 497s appear to be relatively immune. They look like cheap plastic but are actually pretty solid. Also, the connection between the earpiece and the headband is better than it looks.
