The Deals DISCUSSION Thread (READ THE FIRST POST!!!)

Sorry for the slight diversion here, I'll keep it brief:

Sorry as it's probably off topic given the nature of the thread, but how would you say they are in terms of isolation? They certainly sound like a great deal for a closed can so far, and I've never owned a great closed can. Then again, I might be overly hopeful due to the comparison to the Koss, plus the $500 statement. It's awfully tempting.

They're not bad for isolation, certainly better than Fostex TH-X00, but not quite as good as DT770s. If they were made of more solid materials, they could easily be $500+ cans.

Thx for your impressions. How do they compare vs. DT1770? (excuse brevity, on phone).

Not as bass heavy as the DT1770s, that's for sure. Also these have a textured, estat-like midrange, and treble isn't as pronounced as the 1770s.

Thanks for the comments. So how about it compared with HD650? Thanks!

Favorably, but it's hard to compare closed and open cans. Overall, I prefer these to the HD650s, for their mids alone, but they don't have the Sennheisers' soundstage.

Put the Tate and Bauers in my cart on Amazon, just deciding on that final buy (I have the HEK v2, ESP-950's, and HE-560, I really don't NEED these. But, to paraphrase that wise woman Tina Turner, as I am wont to do, "What's need got to do with it...")

The T&B are quite unique, and I like unique. I'll certainly be keeping these for my collection.

I was tempted by the HEM8 as well, but I have the HEM6 and I hate them. It might be unfair to NuForce, but it has made me unwilling to roll the dice on another of their offerings. A $300 discount may make me change my mind though.

I'm really tempted by the HEM8 but would like to know how does it fares against other $200 well-regarded IEMs...

The sound signature is extremely dark and veiled. Upper mids and lower treble are washed out in the mix to a weird degree, the mid-bass is overly boomy, and the treble is too hot. It makes things sound hollow, echoing, and overall very woolly, except for the sibilant, tizzy highs.

They have positive points. Sub-bass is exceptionally good for BA drivers, and they may be the best thing I have ever heard for monitoring drums. You can hear every single drum impact, on the skins or on the cymbals.

Anyway, I only mentioned my take so that people will read some reviews before buying. Everything in the HEM series has a different take on sound, so you cannot assume that the higher up the line you go the better it is. The HEM2 and HEM8 are supposed to be the closest to neutral, the HEM6 is dark, and the HEM4 is bright, to put things in the broadest possible terms.

If you're already so inclined, buy the Tate & Bauers. I'll write a more in-depth review, but so far my impressions are very positive, especially for their $85 price. They have caveats; short cord, worthless BT adapter, shallow earpads, and a plasticky overall feel, but in sound they're damned good, especially in the mids and upper bass region. They remind me a whole lot of the old Stax electret cans, only with fuller bass and more textured mids, like ESP-950s with a more narrow soundstage but better bass extension. They have me intrigued and I'm going to spend more time with them. In fact, going by sound alone, if someone had told me these were $500 I wouldn't have batted an eye.

Just got mine. These are damned fine. Fully agree.

Those mids are sweet.

I had a GL2 and it was a major turd, anyway it's the deals section ppl ^^

Either yours were defective, which is always possible, or this is a level of trolling seldom seen outside of 4chan.
