The Soekris R-2R DAC: Technical Details

The manual says remote control works, but a physical remote is not included.

Quality of Pro-Ject components, in general

I have several of the Pro-Ject turntables and analog electronics here. So I can speak to those.   Everything is pretty solidly built. The electronics are heavier than you might think for their size. For the items that have pretty much the same design but different features (e.g. a built-in...

    Advice about Audeze headphones

The LCD-XC is not as comfortable to wear as the EL-8 but it is a lot better sound quality wise.   Where did you buy the EL-8? You might ask your dealer if you can do an exchange and let them handle the defect situation of the EL-8 that has the buzzing problem. And while you are there take a...

    Amp and DAC for HD800

Quote:   You should be able to Google for comparisons of the Neko Audio D100 Mk2 to the Benchmark DAC1 to answer your first question regarding the difference in sound. I know there are many people who have compared the two. There is also a loaner program and free trial period for the...

Could someone give me a technical answer as to why Multiple DACs are better then a single DAC?

Another scenario is using multiple DAC chips for a single channel.   Running a single channel off multiple DAC chips also increases the voltage or current for that channel which can improve measurements, relative to running that channel off a single DAC chip. But there can be disadvantages...

Mdht Stockholm - New Dac w/Asynch USB Input

Quote:   Thanks for the shout-out, s1rrah. :)   The D100 Mk2 uses a pair of PCM1794A DAC chips, which are 8x oversampling. It does not upsample, by design. Rather than hijack this thread, if you have any questions feel free to PM me or start a new thread. The latest Head-Fi thread on...

Amazing Bay Area Meet 2/19/11 Impressions Thread!

Great meet! Great people! A special thanks to CEE TEE, Miguel (I think I got that right), and I'm afraid I don't have the name of the guy who helped me out after the show.   I had some great conversations with lots of different people. :)

Bay Area Meet (California): February 19th, 2011

Cool. :) I'd prefer the quieter room. Thanks!   Right now the plan would be to bring my D100 Mk2 DAC, the DNA Sonett headphone amp (single-ended), and a pair of Audeze LCD-2 cans (stock cables).

Bay Area Meet (California): February 19th, 2011

Yeah, MOT == member of the trade. I was at the Head-Fi meetup in Burlingame last year, actually right next to AMB. It's not clear to me from the first post if that's still a go at this meetup so I thought it best to ask. I'll wait for CEE TEE's word.

Will MOTs be welcome? I just found out about this but I can probably make it to Burlingame again this year.

MEET IMPRESSIONS AND PICTURES - 2010 CanJam Chicago

Quote: Thanks for stopping by. I really appreciate getting the chance to listen to the LCD-2. :)   The Logan room was a little light on traffic, but I had an great time meeting a bunch of forum people for the first time and hanging out with Hyo, James, and Kay from Phiaton and Marcel...

MEET IMPRESSIONS AND PICTURES - 2010 CanJam Chicago

FWIW, I got a chance to listen to the Audeze LCD-2 headphones with ALO's cabling for a few minutes, and I did not feel as though they were wired out of phase. Admittedly I am much less experienced with phase mismatch in headphones than with speaker setups.

    DAC understanding help needed

You probably want to post this in the DIY section. Maybe a mod can move it. You don't need to use a re-clocker before feeding S/PDIF into the DIR9001. But if you wanted to, then a re-clocking module would take S/PDIF input and also output S/PDIF. There are some S/PDIF receiver chips that...

    DAC > Transport ?

Sometimes the transport can matter. In the realm of poor operation, you might have read errors or unwanted noise output on the digital signal. Poor internal grounding is a possibility. For read errors, you need a new transport of course. Unwanted noise could get filtered out by your DAC. It...

Really, really cheap optical in DAC?

If you're talking about using the audio outputs on your TV, then I'm guessing you are running your source directly into the TV and then to a receiver. Why aren't you running your source into your receiver instead? A DVD player isn't going to have an optical input. It may have an optical output.

If you're looking to purchase used and local, Canuck Audio Mart's classifieds section might be a good place to look. There's also a forum there.

    Balanced Source, Single Ended Amp

Make sure your source will be okay with the XLR to RCA conversion mechanism you use. No load on the cold pin but load on the hot may be undesirable. Shorting cold to ground may be undesirable. Best to ask the manufacturer what will work okay.

    opamp vs none opamp dacs??

I'm a vendor, so feel free to take my words with a grain of salt. Some of the claims of discrete circuits over op-amps are just marketing. But designing a discrete circuit gives you more control over what is happening and so as a engineer you have more freedom to make it do what you want...

    DAC vs. CD player

Some DACs will perform good regardless of the source, others won't fare as well. Hopefully some people will chime in with specific examples that work well with any source, or you could ask the manufacturer of the ones you've narrowed it down to what their thoughts are. Even a good DAC might...

    DAC/amp balanced?

The benefit of balanced cables is that they will better reject picked up noise. This is especially important in very noisy environments (e.g. a computer lab or club venue) or if the cable runs are long. Obviously this requires the gear at both ends to accept balanced signals. But you should...

    DAC/amp balanced?

Well, to get the benefits of a balanced output jack you need to use a balanced interconnect, which requires an amp with a balanced input jack. If your DAC does not have any unbalanced outputs, then you'll need an amp with balanced inputs unless there is some provision for making the DAC work...
