Best drivers for modding?
I'm getting a little bored with the T50RP driver and am looking for recommendations for other drivers to tinker with. Something that is relatively easy to get at a reasonable price ($50-75 a pair), and that would be relatively forgiving of enclosure would be great.- FraGGleR

Speaker wire for AC power cord
I have some CL3 rated speaker wire that I wanted to use to make an AC power cord. The speaker wire is discontinued and I haven't been able to find the specifications on what voltage rating the polyethylene dielectric has. Doing some research, CL3 rated wires are supposed to handle up to 300V...- FraGGleR

DC umbilical length question.
How much does DC cable length matter? I have some gear incoming that has a separate box for the power supply, and I wanted to keep them separated by a few feet (amp on the desk, power supply on a lower shelf) if possible. I have some 18ga wire that I was going to twist up and shield to run...- FraGGleR

Best COMPACT DAC/amp combo for under $1000 for HD650 and HD800
I have been here a while and have a good pulse on what is available, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't overlooking anything new or obscure. I have the HD650 and HD800 which represent two different sound signatures, so I need the DAC/amp combo to play well with both. I am looking for as...- FraGGleR

Closest IEM to the HD800
I don't expect that any IEM could replicate the open, detailed spaciousness of the HD800, but what comes closest? I might have to move entirely away from headphones to IEM's exclusively and am trying to get an idea of what my choices are. I listen to a lot of classical so ability to reproduce...- FraGGleR

DIY OTG Micro USB B cable to USB B Tutorial
In preparation for my incoming CEntrance HifiM8, I decided to try my hand at making a Micro USB B OTG to USB B cable so that I can use my Galaxy Note II as my transport. It turned out alright (confirmed to work with my Note II and my Nuforce HDP) so I decided to post this tutorial for...- FraGGleR

Sennheiser Momentum Balanced Mod
In anticipation of an incoming CEntrance HifiM8, I decided to switch to a balanced cable for my portable of choice, the Sennheiser Momentum. Only problem is that there is a TRS 2.5mm jack on only one side, so while making a new cable is a breeze, it wouldn't be balanced. Since I didn't...- FraGGleR

Cool looking tube recommendations
I was thinking about doing a steampunk makeover of one of my amps and was hoping to get recommendations for cool looking tube recommendations. Metal bases, weird shapes, etc. Hopefully I can find non-functioning ones for cheap. If you have non-functioning tubes that would look cool for the...- FraGGleR

Any "drop in" solutions for asynchronous USB?
I understand that there isn't likely anything off the shelf that I could install into a DAC, but if anyone has had any experience taking apart commercial USB to Spdif converters, I'd love to hear from you. Looking for a simple install (like jumpering output to input).- FraGGleR

Source for inexpensive but not cheap cases?
I had planned on using Par-Metal for a couple projects as they fit the bill from a value standpoint, but they are out of commission for a couple months recovering from their fire. Looking for other sources. Modushop.biz looks nice, but shipping kills a bit of the value. I see some stuff from...- FraGGleR

Best USB implementation?
I know outboard USB to spdif converters are all the rage right now, but I am trying to find single box solution for a USB based DAC. I also like 24/192 capabilities. The more compact the better, but that isn't as important. Up to $1000, but would prefer closer to $500. So what DAC has...- FraGGleR

Balanced Potentiometer Suggestions
Despite my best efforts to avoid further expenses for Headfi, I found too good a deal on some pre-populated B22 boards to pass up. So now I am trying to source the rest of the components as cheaply as possible without sacrificing performance. I will be going balanced for the B22 and...- FraGGleR

Standoff recommendations
I feel silly asking, but I hadn't had to think about them before. Anyways, are there any standard standoffs that people use? Steel? Aluminum? I have only ever used circuit boards designed to slide into enclosures. Thanks!- FraGGleR

Simple switchbox ground clarification
I am going to build a simple splitter/switchbox with an input from a DAC and an analog in being split between an output to my headphone amp and to my speaker amp. I did this before in a plastic box and had to wire grounds for all my RCA inputs and outputs. This time around I am using a...- FraGGleR

DIY General and PSU guides?
I want to build some linear power supplies for my Nuforce HDP and my Sonic Impact Super T Amp. In looking at various kits and plans, I am realizing that I don't know enough basics to even figure out if a particular power supply is the right one for my equipment. I have tried doing some...- FraGGleR

Best amp that can fit into a mint tin?
I found some really neat tins roughly the size of the traditional Altoids tin at an arts and crafts shop today. Slightly taller, and maybe a tiny smaller footprint. 3.63" x 3.38" x 1.31" Anyways, I was wondering what opinions were on the best amp that I could squeeze into one. Obviously the...- FraGGleR

Soldering iron tip recommendations (Metcal SP200)
I got a great deal on a used Metcal SP200 just in time for an amp build (Objective 2). I have a standard conical 700F tip on it and was wondering if there was a better size or geometry for doing circuit board stuff. Why did magic smoke come out of my Nuforce HDP?
Not 100% a DIY question, but I know there are some amazingly knowledgeable people here who might be able to explain. Basically, I hooked up a new, regulated power supply (Goldsource 13.8V 5A from Amazon) to my Sonic Impact Super T-amp (TA2024 based) and I heard some rice krispies (snap...- FraGGleR

Could a modded T50rp best an HD650 (or come close to an LCD-2)?
Hi all, I still dream of an LCD-2, but I'm pretty sure it will remain out of reach unless I sold all my gear (which would leave me listening to it out of my laptop). I have read a bit about a modded T50rp being able to get 80% the way to an LCD-2. While it might be hyperbole based on the...- FraGGleR

Shure SRH840 Total Mod
The Shure SRH840 was my first fullsize headphone purchased through my exposure to Headfi so they have a special place in my heart. Next step up from HD650?
Hello, been away for a couple years due to school. Currently have an HD650 paired with a Nuforce HDP and am quite pleased with the combo. IEM similar in sound to HD650
I really enjoy the sound signature of my HD650's and would like to get some nicer IEM's than my E2C's and MEelectronics M6's. The E2C's lacked bass and are almost 4 years old now, and while the M6's gave me the bass I was missing, the treble was a little too harsh and I just couldn't get a great...- FraGGleR

At what length does gauge matter?
I am a fan of Mogami W2893 which is a starquad of 26awg conductors, which has worked wonderfully for some short headphone cables and interconnects. At what length (extension cable) should I look at a lower awg of conductor, any? I probably wouldn't exceed 15 feet at this point.- FraGGleR

Power switch help, please. Bravo amp.
The powerswitch (push button, latching) on my Bravo amp, no longer reliably catches (like 1 in 15 tries). I have resorted to simply unplugging the power cord, but do not like that idea.
