I use my Veritè on the Crack w/Speedball and what I can say is that, depending on the set of valves I use on the Crack, the Veritè doesn't have the mids set back, on the contrary, it can have the mids very prominent, with the vocals right in the face, without, however, leaving the treble and bass in the background like the HD6xx.

As the right combination, the Veritè looks to me like a super HD6xx, super detailed, with a huge stage and very musical and exciting.

Agreed. I also use my Verite with a Crack with SB and the midrange is thick, liquid, and beautiful while also being quick and detailed. It's a really seductive sound. Most of time I use a Chatham 6SA7 with a CBS Hytron 5814. It's a great combo with the Crack (both with SB and without).

Was just about to ask what tubes you guys use with the Crack for the Verite!

I'm using a Mullard CV2984 and Brimar CV4003, but haven't hardly done any tube rolling with the Crack (with speedball) at all and really don't know what I'm missing.

You're in for a treat. The Crack responds very well to tube rolling. Other power tubes I enjoy with the Crack are the RCA Blackplate 6AS7 ( the Chatham I mentioned above is actually a 6AS7), Tung Sol 6AS7, and Mullard 6080 (same as the CV2984). Another popular power tube for the Crack is the Chatham 5998 though I have yet to try.

For input tubes your Brimar is a great choice. I've had great luck with Mullard 12AU7s, Amperex 12AU7s, RCA Blackplate 12AU7s, RCA Cleartop 12AU7s, Telefunken Smoothplate 12AU7s, and Raytheon Windmill getter 5814s but my favorite overall is the CBS Hytron 5814.

I believe the Chatham version of the Tung Sol 5998 was named the 2399. Both are fantastic sounding tubes. Brighter than most and a very wide stage and excellent sub bass extension

With Veritè I use a GEC 6080 for power and a pair of Fivre 6c5g (with adapter) on the Crack.

One of the best combinations I've found so far with Veritè.

I've had the Chatham 5998 in my speedball crack for about 6 months and just put in the GEC 6080. I find the 5998 (I have two Tung Sol and one Chatham) to be excellent in the highs, very clear, and very detailed. The GEC 6080 has more low-end presence, which is quite pleasing. Here's a few power tubes I've collected. I've also decided to stick with the RCA clear top 12au7, as the preamp tube. My camphor burl VO sound excellent with this amp and my RME ADI2 DAC. Currently, considering the MicroZOTL2 (MZ2) headphone amp.

Awesome! Both the GEC 6AS7 and 6080 are on my short list of power tubes to try next along with the Chatham/Tung Sol 5998s.

Thanks- the Bottlehead Crack has been fun with the VO and now I'm curious if a proper tube amp (not a kit) would bring out the best in my VO and Auteur headphones.

I've wondered the same. I also use the Verite (and Auteur, Aeolus, Eikon, and Atticus) with a Woo Audio WA6 and occasionally a Prima Luna Prologue 4 with adapter. It sounds excellent on all. I usually use either a MHDT Pagoda or Steeplechase for a DAC.

To be honest I'm extremely satisfied with the sound and from everything I've read you have to go above the $1000 range to get something better sounding then the Crack with SB. I certainly prefer the Crack with SB (with good tubes but that applies to all tube gear) slightly over the WA6 which retails for $1000. I think people tend to down play the Crack's performance because of it being a kit. Having said that I will probably get something a little more high end like a Pendant, Woo W2, one of the dedicated Prima Luna headphone amps, etc in the future. For now though I'm more than satisfied with the Crack's performance.

Yeah that's a beautiful setup! I love how the Camphor Burl matches the roughness of the BHC's frame.

I got curious about the same thing, and a couple weeks ago I was able to hear a friend's Kenzie Encore with the VO and Auteur. The amp blew my mind so much that I went out and bought a Forge a week later. I was surprised to see how well an output transformer coupled tube amp worked with ZMF's, which I always just assumed would sound better on OTL designs (mostly because of my experience with a WA6-SE). But it added a special kind of magic to the Auteur, giving it incredible bass and tons of layering, but it also really complimented the VO as well, with a mildly warm, solid midrange, amazing imaging, and tons of resolution. Not to say anything bad about the BHC! But the Ampsandsound stuff is definitely a few steps up both price-wise and sonically, and it's worth checking out.
