Just a quick report.
My purpleheat Verite now have about 200 hours on them.
I have to say, I absolutely didn't like the SPL Phonitor X with the Verite. The amp and headphone pairing sounded monolithic and lifeless 80% of the time.
I've replaced the Phonitor X with the Rogue Audio RH-5. The RH-5 has given the Verite the weight and texture and life that was absolutely missing with the Phonitor. I'm not exactly sure why that Phonitor X doesn't match well with the Verite but I've read that amps with a high damping factor and low output impedance don't play well with ZMF headphones. Whatever the reason....
The Rogue Audio RH5 is a hybrid amp. It uses 2-12AU7's in amplifying the signal. Then the MOSFETS take over and apply the voltage and take care of business from that point further in the circuit. I've added a pair on NOS Mullard 12AU7's into my RH-5 so I do get some of that classic British Hi-Fi sound that I really love. This amp and Verite pairing is everything I had hoped for. The blackground and power and ease and speed I love with soild-state and a little bit of the tube tone and texture I love with an all tube design.
I still have my all tube Woo Audio WA6-SE at Woo for service. It will be there for at least 2 more weeks. So this is the system I will live with for at least the next few weeks. And that's okay.
That's one thing about this hobby. You have to keep on your toes and not make assumptions and be flexible. Also I think in an ideal world you should have a few key pieces of higher quality gear to be able to experiment with and make adjustments with.
One final thing. Rogue Audio doesn't seem to get alot of attention in the Head-Fi world. They have an amazing reputation in the two-channel world. But I think they are a stellar company with a great reputation. Small company made in the USA. Check them out.
