The sad news is that everyone who ordered Sapele will still be getting Sapele, so yes this was a bug. We made a little mistake here internally!

The good news is that we will be releasing the LTD closed African Blackwood soon, it's not quite ready yet but if you want a beautiful, heavy and sweet sounding blackwood VC soon that will be a choice!
Awesome, good to know!

So, today's interesting and amazing news! My Verite Closed shipped, my first ZMF!! But wait, there's more...

I'm dead certain it's a bug, but I ordered the Sapele VC - but my shipping notification lists an LTD African Blackwood Verite Closed. I didn't even know that was an OPTION. I'm hoping against hope it's true, though, an African Blackwood VC would be a beautiful black pearl of the endgame...
May I ask when did you order your VC?

How good of a buy button sniper will I need to be to snag one? 😬
We have built up a pretty good supply of blackwood - at least 60 sets, I'll update before we release them exactly how much we have.

Question guys, I just got a copilot pad I want to use with my VC. I can't seem to install it around the strap (beneath the metal/leather band) because there's just not enough room. I can't install it around the entire headband (metal/leather band + strap) either because that's too thick for the co-pilot.

Should I remove the strap and install the co-pilot around the metal/leather band?
If so, I know the screws that hold the strap, also tighten the inserts so the metal band is kept in place.
If I would remove the strap, will I still be able to tighten them enough to keep the metal band in place?

I couldn't get my co-pilot strap to fit either, and it just barely fits when taking off the strap, though Zach says "it absolutely works great on ZMFs".

According to ZMF, the strap both should and shouldn't be removed when installing the pad:

"The Pilot Pad is designed to be used with the strap, not in replacement of it. " -ZMFheadphones Support Staff
"...you just have to remove the suspension strap and install the co pilot with its two sided velcro" - Zach Mehrbach

This was it originally with the strap still in place:

Even with the strap removed, the Velcro of the co-pilot pad barely hangs on:

I'd push on the middle and a side would pop up, and I'd push on the side and the middle would pop up.

When I asked ZMF support about this they said "The fit of the pilot pad looks correct. There are no abnormalities that I can see."

The screws act as set screws. They push directly against the metal band so you will be able to tighten them enough. They will stick out though by about the thickness of the removed strap like in the product images for the co-pilot pad which show it installed with a removed strap:

If your headphone has magnesium uprights you should record the screw removal. When I was removing two of the screws on mine I noticed the magnesium started to come out along with the screws as a result of the screws being overtightened during assembly. One was so bad that the threading completely came out and I couldn't get the screw back in.

Note that I was using a tiny manual screwdriver to try to avoid damage and not the power drill ZMF recommends:

I'd advise against the non-torque-limiting power drill technique since this can damage the threading.
I've asked about the recommended installation torque and apparently they don't know.

The initial response I got about the stripped threading was "we can send you a pair of new uprights for $100. Alternatively, if you would like to send them in to us we will send you an invoice for all necessary repairs once one of our technicians evaluates your headphones." despite Zach saying that the uprights aren't user-replaceable due to potential to damage the rod set screws.

Note that my headphones were about 2-3 weeks old.

Eventually they relented and are now fixing them under warranty. :weary:

Wanted to jump in here and help out. Zach and I have been so lucky to grow ZMF with an awesome staff that can help us with things like customer support, assembly, production management, inventory tracking-- etc. All these things are collaborative and our staff consults with us to help get clarity in situations and how to respond when less run of the mill things arise.

When the situation was brought to our attention we tried to act swiftly with a return label and tying the whole situation up within 3 days of the initial outreach. I do think we received your feedback to the initial email and promptly got underway to help out.

I am really sorry there was distress in the situation and that off the bat our initial take may have been wrong, we will definitely look at the headphone and fix anything for zero cost as needed. We won't always get it right at first shot, but we try to be open and responsive and in this situation tried to make it right.

Zach and team have been building the headphones for years, and continuously make improvements, we did actually switch away from those non-variable power drills a few years back and now use the DeWalt gyroscopic drivers that allow you to have as little or as much power as needed. We really put our all into what we do, and we're making a number of video's and media to show how our workshop works, which we will start sharing soon on our youtube page.

Please always feel free to reach out in email. We are here and our intention is to help where we can.
