Usung BE2 pads definitely brings tonality towards Neutral if you want that. Atleast we have pads to change the sound to tweak it to our liking. Auteur hybrid is my favourite one for classical or Congested passages in songs. BE2 solid pads felt closer to neutral tuning. Depending on your system, Silver cable helps lift the “Veil” and make it airy too. All small bits help to fine tune sound of VC.

Unfortunately I have the same impression. It sounds worse than my Atticus and feels like 1 or 2 class below HD800. VC sounds veiled and sluggish.
Note, I bought Atticus second hand, so its been burnt in by the time I had it.
Hopefully with 200 hours burn in, VC will sound better.
Switch to silver cable with Auteur hybrid or BE2 pads. It will sound whole lot different compared to stock or any copper cable and solid Universe or Auteur pads. Be careful when using Silver cable though. Synergy is very important with Silver cables. Try before buying it if you can. When I first heard VC with stock cable and Auteur solid pads, it sounded very dark to my ears. But things changed drastically with Auteur hybrid (as few people here suggested, Thanks to those) and Lavricable Grand cable (Pure silver 22 Awg). I love my VC now. Hopefully you will be able to get your desired sound signature from these can.

The hybrid pads may not be dark but they are a hint muted, they also don't allow upper air and bloom in quite the same way as the lambskins. They also don't let the instruments harmonic structure completely integrate and they are not quite as focused or detailed. But I would tend to agree that overall the hybrids do sound better in the first 100 to 150 hours of burn in. If you voice your equipment and let them fully burn in the lambskin will sound both more neutral and more musically satisfying. At that point the hybrids do sound euphonic and a hint opaque with slight loss of air, space, staging and focus. They are also not as satisfying with PRAT or transients. But depending on how you tune your equipment, cables and tweaks I can see hybrids being worth some of that loss to gain more integrated tonality. But I really believe you can get that elsewhere and maintain everything the lambskins do better.

Happy listening,

When mine arrived on Friday with the Auteur Hybrid fitted as these were the sellers favorite pad, I was really disappointed, dry, veiled a strange sound i thought. Coming right off the back of listening to the HD800.

I put the universe solid on and bam the dryness had gone and there was now for want of a better word a wetness to the sound and it sounded brilliant. Large sound, deep and wide sound stage.

The Auteur solid sounds to me like an EQ'd sound bass slamming, highs sparkling but never sibilant still deep and wide with vocals center stage very like 800 presentation of vocals.

The bass and thicker sound compared to the 800 took a little of adjustment as unless the track is bass heavy the 800 is a very see through image wise.

I find pad position make a difference ears nearer the front of the pad gives a dryer sound and the further back your ears are the wetter and euphoric it sounds.

Happy birthday baby !

Tomorrow, these babies are 2y old. I've managed to get some hours in most days. I'm just as thankful and excited today as I was in the beginning. Long may it last!

The Atticus is an easier to drive headphone with not as much power at 300 ohms to get the coil moving. Aside from burn in - what amp are you using?

Hi Zach, Burson Soloist 3XP via balanced output.
I'm currently still on 24 hours-ish of burn in. I'm planning to do a proper comparison again when it reaches 50 hours.

Hi Zach, Burson Soloist 3XP via balanced output.
That amp and many Burson solid states have an impedance very close to zero, even with a lot of power at 300 ohms, the sound will be extremely damped, without natural decay. Something like a Beyer A20 or schiit Valhalla would open the air and let the driver breath more. Even an Amp like the JDS element at an impedance of 1 has much less damping.

So aside from burn in it may be worth exploring a different amp option of you want a less damped sound.

Some people do love a very damped sound so please don't take my feedback as negative towards Burson, but it sounds like that may not be your cup of tea with the VC.

I was looking for a closed back headphone to block out my son constant chatter while gaming and other sounds.
Something as resolving as the HD800 so I looked into the 820 and Z1R and after reading the threads I thought they do not sound what I am after, to many downsides.
After reading all the positive thoughts and great YouTube videos ON the VC I took the plunge on a secondhand Ironwood Vérité.

Oh wow I am so glad i did this thing is crazy good to my ears, it pairs like a glove with the X26 Pro and V281.
Such a deep sound stage and great width that does not feel like a downgrade from the 800.

I would always try my other headphones from time to time and right away say "oh no that does not come close to the 800" but now I have a new top S class.
Thanks to everyone that spoke about the Vérité C and to all the people that made the video reviews.
They definitely have magic. It’s hard to beat the visual, tactile and audible experience of listening to a VC plugged into a nice stack of gear. Preferably the kind that glows a soft orange color in the dark

Have you tried different pads? They make a large difference.
