So, Impressions... where to I begin, well let me say that when these( walnut Omni with Lambskin pads via balance 4 pin cable) arrived I was thrilled to plug them in. Now, I have a grill modded [HE-560] which I use focus-a pads normally( right now they need to be replace so using focus pads) and it is paired with a Charleston cable company balanced cable which is very nice and goes for close to 175 I believe. These things all did wonders for the spaciousness and width of openness the HE-560 has from it's stock form, as well the treble is more in line with less notice in spike where it doesn't get hot or noticeably to me.
I was not sure what to expect with the Omni, being a previous Vibro MKl owner of a walnut set, if it be more similar to that or completely different tuning and sound. I was pleasantly surprise because when I plugged them in there was an instant liking to the sound signature( a neutral, with a slight warmth). The midrange was not as forward as my vibros, bass fell a bit more linear and closer to neutral(but with more depth, extension, and impact), treble was more detailed extended and still not fatiguing which is very nice. The impact was a little much because of the the more thin, drier, faster HE-560(there is not as heavy or a finite slam with the He-560 it is very articulate but quick and tight).
I took time to digest and kept playing tracks from all the current genres I have on my portable drive( I rotate files to save space and keep whats left on my main storage drive for a later date) and man was I surprised and it's champion like ability to sound good with every genre I have from insturmental, indie, prog rock( especially like indie prog rock and instrumental), metal, classical, big band, some jazz and blues, folk, and cinematic scores.
I actually found myself testing this headphone to see if I could hear anything different from my He-560( which is a fantastic headphone even if it is not everyone's cup of joe), because I was surprised I was hearing details some small things that I did not notice with the HE-560 in a very natural way though. It was a laid back kind of detail retrieval, like it was not trying to force more detail than should be there, it is was just doing it's best to present you each instrument and vocal and then balanced and blended into one musical, detailed, and engaging combo.
At one point I closed on my eyes on Coheed and Cambria's 3rd cd Good Apollo Im burning star IV Volume 1( 2005 not 2007) and it felt like each instrument or vocalist at one point almost had their own little spot light shown on them for their part then it would go to the next and so on. Until you realized what a great collaboration of musicians and songwriters were before you, experiencing this through the NFB28 to the ZMF Omni walnut was invigorating.
I think the HE-560 did just as well if a different signature and presentation with some music, they both hit hard for the phones they are, and as far as scaling into the 1k+ gear I am inexperienced with which may take the lead for someone that loves both. I know that having both would be fantastic because they are very different and the Omni compliments so well with the HE-560.
As far as space, separation, and tonality the Omni is very good definitely above par on any semi closed headphone I have used and just as good as many well received open headphones. The modded He-560 I own is more spacious and the tonality( to my ears is equal if different) and has very open sound because of the mod, but the Omni it many ways bests it with certain genres specifically with separation, imaging, and detail retrieval( not to say it isn't there with the HE-560 but because airy space it feels less noticeable and the Omni does it very naturally).
Anyways I just ranted for at least a good 5-10 mins so I that is my impressions thus far. I apologize that I didnt paragh and space it out, but honestly my birthday is tomorrow and my weekend has been complete ******* hell minus these headphones.
