ZMF Aegis Official Thread

Some notes I joted down last night while listening, with the Aegis and CC pairing.

. . .there is grip and texture for days. The music is alive and notes are floating all around my head, while just exploding out of thin air with the CC, with more note weight than the HA300MK2, yet still crisper, cleaner and way faster.

. . .the Aegis and CC are magical together!

Today's first combo, and this one is really making the CC's sing, and is bringing the musicality in spades.

Input - Reflektor 1579 60'
Output - Mullard EL33
Rectifier - Mullard GZ32 Black Plate

More to come on the sound specifics, but I do want to mention the EL33 are fantastic, and can be found for under $100 a pair. They are in the pole position right now for me, when it comes to affordable output tubes.

EL33 do not need an adapter, do they?

thanks! I will try them.

No problem, only thing you need to watch for is they are low power tubes, so I would use a rectifier other than GZ34 with them or they will bias very hot.

Thanks, any particular rectifier that you would recommend?

Well for biasing purposes, you can use almost anything that is compatible with the amp. I don't have an enormous collection of rectifiers, but of the ones I do have I like the Brimar 5R4GY most. They can be a little expensive though. You could grab a Chatham 5R4WGY "potato masher" for very little money.

Yeah, the Brimar is a really good tube!

Terrific, I will see what I can find. I have a Mullard GZ34 on order but I can always use it on my Decware ZMF OTl :relaxed: - Thank you!

You can use the GZ34 with higher power tubes (e.g, EL34, 6L6, KT66, KT88, etc.), just want to avoid with lower power tubes in Aegis as the low voltage drop across the rectifier will bias them on the hot side.

How about a Mullard GZ32? Would this work with the EL33?

Yeah it will, that's what @Wes S is using in his photo. When I tested them, the GZ34 biased the EL33 close to max plate dissipation. The GZ32 has a slightly higher voltage drop compared to GZ34, so it will cool off the bias point of the EL33 away from maximum.
